11:20 a.m.: This post has been updated to include additional details from American Airlines.

On Thursday evening, a 40-year-old man — with dark, curly hair, olive skin and an exotic foreign accent — boarded a plane. It was a regional jet making a short, uneventful hop from Philadelphia to nearby Syracuse.

Or so dozens of unsuspecting passengers thought.

And had they done nothing and the plane blown up then they would have been responsible for their own deaths.

The point of terrorism is to create confusion and fear among the populace, and that's what's happening. Either way the victims, or the potential victims, lose by being called 'paranoid' or getting themselves killed. And the Islamic terrorists who created this environment are forgotten. The Islamists are well ahead of the general population in their psychological games.

He could have been hiding a weapon of math destruction.

One way to guarantee you get more terrorism is to surrender to it.

What does that really mean? How do you surrender to it and, conversely, how do you defeat it? Slogans are often limited in their strategic impact.

You said it yourself, the point of terrorism is to create fear and confusion. If you give in to fear, like this case, you show that terrorism works.

Personally the feds did what they had to do. They had to investigate the woman's statement

It is the woman I would laugh at. Thinking that someone writing is dangerous

You're calling it fear, others might call it discretion. It seem there is some confusion as to how to respond to possible acts of terrorism, as we saw before the murders in San Bernardino. People were afraid of being accused of "Islamophobia" despite seeing Muslims with guns behaving suspiciously. Had they called someone perhaps those lives would have been saved. The same was true on 9/11.

It's much easier to be correct and judgemental after the fact, isn't it?

Did she know it was limited to writing? She may have felt she was saving many lives. Again, you're passing yourself off as an expert on after the fact incidents.

There are a few people on this board that seem to think Ivy Leaguers and economists are a worse threat to America than an Islamic terrorists.

That may be possible, but it's doubtful.

An Italian-American econ professor is related to 9/11 how?

So she thought he was writing terror plans in Arabic? :lamo Quick, save us, someone is doing math!

Well our numbers are Arabic numerals.

Re: Ivy League economist ethnically profiled, interrogated for doing math on American

Well our numbers are Arabic numerals.

Don't say that on this board. You'll scare the pure hell out of a lot of Trump supporters and Teabaggers who will then demand we use an "American" numeral system.

How could someone writing math equations on a plane lead to it blowing up? Warning signs shouldn't be ignored, but there were no warning signs here...nothing that could reasonably be regarded as a warning.

Couldn´t she have paid attention at school and done the whole plane a favour?

You think the Feds actions were 'personal'? Not professional? Sounds like a strange assertions to me. What'd the mathematician ever do to THEM?

OK... I'm just yanking your dangling grammar-chain. Personally - I think someone more professional would have found a way to investigate more discreetly. And, personally, I think people have indeed succumbed to the temptations of emotional, fearful, catastrophizing, over-reactions to such things.

Sure, Italians blow up airplanes every day, right? Paranoia will destroy 'ya. But, since he was Italian, we have to assume that his math was the economics for the heroin trade. He's in the Mafia, of course. And the Mafia is a bit like ISIS. Therefore, we need to send him to Guantanamo. And, while we were at it, we need to send Mexicans to Gitmo, and Native Americans too. If they are brown, we don't want 'em around. Right? Sheesh.

Sorry, but when you start thinking Italian economics professors are Arab terrorists, you have let the terrorists win.
