If they do strip the nomination from trump even if he has the majority of delegates, do you believe it will just about guaranteee a hillary whitehouse

A majority of Republican insiders say Donald Trump should not get the GOP presidential nomination if he falls short of winning a majority of delegates – even if Trump amasses more than any of his opponents.

That’s according to The POLITICO Caucus – a panel of strategists, activists and operatives in seven key swing states. Roughly six-in-10 Republicans said the party should nominate another candidate if Trump finishes with a plurality, rather than the required 1,237-delegate majority necessary to claim the party nomination.

“Rules is rules. You have to get a majority,” said a Virginia Republican who, like all respondents, completed the survey anonymously. “That's the problem with our country: No one ever wins anymore.”
The question is central to the GOP calculus before the Cleveland convention:Should the party award the nomination to the candidate who won the most delegates in total -- as Trump himself has advocated -- or stick to the rule that a candidate must win at least 1,237 delegates in order to be the nominee?

Watching Republicans implode like this illustrates with perfection why we need a strong organized 3rd party.

The problem now for the GOP is Trump is looking like he will be very close to the delegate count at convention, but we all still suspect some sort of broker. Trump has 739, needs 1237 to win, so he is shy about 498, and there are 944 still up for grabs (all rough math... so give or take.) Even if he breaks the threshold we all still think Republicans will have some shenanigans at convention. It is just not shaping up to be pretty.

On the off chance that Cruz pulls off a sizable percentage of the remaining delegates I have my doubts on anyone in the field being anywhere near the threshold to win. Cruz is still back at 465, Rubio and Kasich are even further back. Under that scenario the odds of convention broker and all sorts of backroom deals goes up exponentially. We may have no idea who the GOP puts up until the final moments of the convention.

I keep saying this, we very well might see this election season end up in the history books.

Depending on whatever the brokered deal is at convention, the GOP might end up manufacturing an Independent ticket run for Trump taking a sizable portion of those who could vote GOP with him. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. And worse, the GOP allowed this to happen on the back of Establishment party power ignoring their own voter base for way too long now.

All of my hopes and dreams are coming true. Trump is indeed the enema that the Republican Party needs to purge itself of the infection of right libertarians and tea party know noting who have attempted to hijack the party over the last many years. And the current situation where Trump is winning and the only other alternative in sight is crazy Cruz - well that just about says it all.

The only question now becomes will this Republican party debacle also lose them Congress? The Senate most likely.... the House - thats a real longshot.

.

Perhaps Trump will accommodate you.

Kasich has stayed in the race at the behest of the GOP in the hopes he will syphon some delegate votes from trump to keep him from the magic number.

They can't strip the nomination from Trump if he has the majority of delegates. In that instance, he wins automatically. If he can't close the deal and get a majority of delegates, then the nominee will be the first other person to do so.

do you believe it will just about guaranteee a hillary whitehouse

Regardless, it's looking like the advantage is to Hillary for November. That being said, the data we have says that the best way to guarantee a Hillary white house is to have Trump be the GOP nominee.

So much for him uniting the party.

 I lol'd. Well done, anonymous Virginia Republican

Changing the rules to give it to Trump is no more legitimate than changing the rules to keep him from being able to get it would be. If Trump wants to be the nominee, then he needs to win - he claims to be good at that - the support of a majority of the party, as represented by their delegates.

I hope not, what we need is someone who can grab Independents. All Trump can gather up are older, angry, social conservative, and primarily white Republicans who are upset with Establishment Republicans.

You sure loaded up a lot of liberal talking points in two sentences.

If you call people in their 20's 30's 40's old......you might be right.

True, I might have gone a bit too far there. Apologies.

The GOP worked the meme of "Gubmint is the enemy" and fought to make Gubmint as dysfunctional as possible that they have only themselves to blame for a demigoad like Trump rising to hijack the party. I put Cruz in the same barrel, his is just a bad haircut and temper away from the Orange Guy. Instead of working to make a functional government they fought to cripple it and make it the enemy and surprise surprise they discovered when the party 'faithful' saw it as the enemy they saw the PUB leadership in the crosshairs!!!!

Bless they leedle hearts, the PUB leadership didn't think past next week for so long they are in a box of their own creation. They stayed so focused on defeating Obama and his agenda they forget the rest of the People's business- great for their radical Right base who back then thought Obama was a Kenyan Muslim- but the vast majority of citizens thought their time could be better spent. Congress's and PUB polls didn't go single digit because of 'special interests' it went south long before that became a talking point. Dysfunctional was the buzz word back then.

Who knows, if the PUBs could purge the radical right from it's ranks I just might come back to the fold. I'll wager a shiny nickle if the PUBs quit trying to build a voting block by strident ideology and instead concentrate on good governance with a concern for ALL Americans and a more level playing field- they just might win without selling out to super pacs and extremists.

Moderates and independents still are the majority- I'd like to think people looking to the future and not pining for the past are still the majority as well... :peace

The Establishment's public backlash against him has given Trump ample cause to desert the party and run a third party campaign if he comes to the convention with a big lead in delegates and gets stiffed. Watch him when the time comes to threaten to do just that, whether he intends to or not, as a ploy to scare the party into giving him the nomination.

Sad, but true. However, the dems aren't in good shape themselves. The ONLY excitement for them in this election is the guy who might come close but will be denied only because of super delegates. AND he'll lose to someone even the dems know should be wearing orange.

You are correct about the excitement factor lacking for Clinton. I would point out however that winning forgives many sins and covers many faults. I would hope that after November the party begins to take a long hard look at making sure the next crop of wanna be nominees is fresh and interesting.

The Republican establishment sure hopes so! Better for them to get an establishment candidate in there than someone from their own party. Power first. Can't let one of these fringe candidates screw with their stranglehold on the party.

So libertarians and tea partiers shouldn't have a voice in this country, but far leftwing loons like socialist Bernie Sanders and his ilk should? Got it.

Well, more to the point, he doesn't know what he's talking about when breaking down the portions of the GOP base. The libertarian, small-government side is generally the one most apoplectic about Trump.

i have book marked a number of different threads now

i will add this to the list

while i agree things look bleak on the GOP side right now, i have been around long enough to know that not everything always works out the way you might think it will

and there is going to be a lot of crow to be eaten by those on your side if things dont go as you say they will

you could be right....we could lose everything....house, senate, and presidency.....right now that wouldnt surprise me

with the knuckleheads in charge in DC, i dont think they could screw it up any worse

but.....i also believe in the underdog....always have

and i will hold out hope that something will change to turn the tide

not sure if i would be eating all those eggs in your basket just yet though.....

He's probably planning on sneaking through the middle as a compromise candidate.

I think you're missing the bigger picture here.
People that are voting for Trump are moderates that don't favor illegal immigration and they won't care about the nuances of the rules.
They'll see a guy who got the most delegates and had the election stolen from him.

You'll be alienating independents and moderate republicans, for possibly decades.

Trump supporters are so damn ignorant and annoying.

this is how it is. Abraham Lincoln won the nomination in this exact fashion. You were told months ago your candidate is an asshole, and we refuse to go along with him. face it, he is a loser. if he manages to win the gop nomination, he will lose the general in a landslide. his supporters can go **** off.

Exactly. His supporters will simply see this as the establishment screwing their man and in turn them out of what was rightfully theirs. And they will not go meekly into the night and come back in November and pull the GOP lever.

If they do strip the nomination from Trump...

Should a brokered convention take place and Republican delegates go with another candidate who received fewer delegate votes than Trump going into the Convention, the RNC wouldn't be stripping Trump of anything because he wouldn't have receive the pre-requisition number of votes to win the nomination outright - 1237. The thing people fail (or refuse) to take into account concerning both party primaries is it's not majority wins. The Primary system for both parties works in much the same way as the Electoral College does for the Presidency. You have to get to a minimum number of delegates to be declared a clear winner - 270. So, in the strictest sense, if you don't reach the magic number, you don't win. As such, just as Congress votes for who it believes should be president in a similar situation, so does each party make the same assessment by special delegate vote.

Has to be the dumbest thinking, in terms of strategy I've ever seen.
Trump has them by the short and curlys, wheeling and dealing with him is better than sinking the ship.
