Councillor Rob Ford, whose tumultuous four years as mayor of Toronto turned him into an international cultural phenomenon, died on Tuesday at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 46.Official word of his death came from a close member of the family. His passing marks the end of a rare political actor whose everyman persona, budget-slashing agenda and very public substance-abuse issues inspired both intense loyalty and deep loathing among the city’s diverse electorate.
It also ends an 18-month struggle with cancer.

The most famous Canadian mayor has passed away today after a battle with cancer.

My condolences.

An extremely troubled man... Who was larger than life.

There are few families these days that are untouched by the scourge of cancer, and despite his many missteps, I know many will be deeply saddened today at his passing.

May his family find peace with his loss.

For all of his flaws, he also seemed to have a lot of strengths, and was one of those individuals whose personality and character seems to run the entire gamut of human expression - the type of character we often fall for, in bittersweet terms.

Upon seeing the cancer headline, I originally assumed a long protracted cancer battle may have contributed to his substance abuse problems, but the article details do not seem to support these thoughts.

As someone who nursed & buried his father, successfully nursed his brother back to health, and had his own personal scare - all due to cancer, I can only empathize with him & his family while wishing them well.

And not just the scourge of cancer, but that of substance abuse as well; two points of commonality sadly prevalent in today's society.

And I think that's the particular problem, in both America and Canada, the sad thing was we criminalized substance abuse, rather than treating it.

Which created exponentially bigger problems.

That's something we need to change.

As a strong supporter of Mayor Ford and his time in office, I will miss the chance to re-elect him in a couple of years. His common sense approach to local government and his abhorrence of those who fed off the public trough, most notably his fellow city politicians, he was a breath of fresh air this city desperately needed at that time and could well use again now. He was forced out of his re-election bid for Mayor a couple of years ago by his first run in with this rare cancer and he had seemed to lick that problem only to find recently that the cancer had spread to his bladder and perhaps elsewhere. From that point, it seemed obvious and sadly a losing battle.

While I'll miss his character around the city - he was indeed a larger than life personality - he will be more greatly missed by his extended family that has been in politics for many decades. He had two very young children and I wish them and his wife some comfort and peace as they deal with this loss. God bless them and may Rob RIP.

Considering the 18 month battle with cancer its a real shame he caught so much grief over the drugs and hookers. He was truly an enigmatic character. Loved, loathed, and apparently seen by his constituents as effective.

RIP

He was a leading fashion icon and pushed the boundaries.

The fashion industry just lost a legend.

Rest in peace.

Rob Ford was hard to pigeonhole. I thought he was kind of a buffoon, but dammit if he didn't do a lot of things I wish more politicians did -- get out there on the streets, meet some real people and actually listen to what they have to say, as opposed to just throwing canned soundbites at us. He was certainly unique.

RIP. I don't wish the manner of his passing on my worst enemy. F cancer in the A.

I was not a fan, but I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone and I really feel for his wife and kids.

For some reason I was thinking Tom Ford.

Never mind.

Ah. I figured you probably didn't mean this guy...

For some reason I thought you might have been confusing him with Don Cherry...
