This man is a local guy who was attending UVa and apparently was detained for trying to steal a banner from his hotel in NK. His confession seems contrived

SEOUL, South Korea — An American student detained in North Koreaappeared in a government-arranged news conference in Pyongyang, the capital, on Monday, apologizing for what the country called an antistate crime: trying to steal a political banner.

Most likely. Typical practice by the DPRK

His confession is contrived. The CIA doesn't run ops from churches in Ohio.
The charges against him said he was encouraged to commit the “hostile act” by a member of an Ohio church, a secretive university organization and the C.I.A.
Another strange statement:
Mr. Warmbier also said that a member of the secretive Z Society at his school also encouraged his act, promising him membership if he helped to promote the group’s goal of spreading freedom and eliminating tyranny, the agency said.

Only idiots go to NK.

I remember as a kid watching some cold war US Made film which of course was pretty much propaganda against communism about US POWs held by the North Koreans and prisoners being forced to confess to using "germ warfare" against North Korea. I asked my father if it was true (he was a WWII Veteran) and he said of course not

And I said, how do we know and he said

North Korea still exists

Without an armored division or two, that is.

Our policy should be is if you are not on government business and retarded enough to go to North Korea then you are on your own. Because I am pretty sure someone told that moron don't go to North Korea.

He's from a family in Wyoming Ohio which is a nice suburb, with a superb public school about 12 miles north of downtown Cincinnati just up I75. and yes the local news has reported that many people warned him not to go to North Korea

Did he think these people were lying to him? Is he some idiot North Korea sympathizer and thought nothing would happen to him?

I really have no idea why he went there. I can see the leaders of that nation assuming he is a spy since no one in their right mind would want to go there for normal reasons!

Should we send Ambassador Rodman back to see if he can fix this?

People need to stop going to NK. Or at the very least, we should stop making any efforts to get them out.

Everything sounds fake about this except for the possibility that a college kid would be dumb enough to try to steal propoganda from NK because it would look cool in the frat house or whatever.

I'll never understand American's who travel to NK or Iran.
