87 cases, 10 fatal, of Legionella bacteria found in Flint area; connection to water c

Re: 87 cases, 10 fatal, of Legionella bacteria found in Flint area; connection to wat

Wait,

We know how the Legionella bacteria is spread and contracting Legionaires is very rare. People with functioning immune systems are usually not at risk.

It's typically spread through the air from mist and or water vapor from poorly maintained cooling towers used to cool large buildings and or hospitals.

Not from the tap. Tap water is treated with anti-microbiological agents that easily kill the legionella bacteria.

Those cooling towers usually have a automated diapersal mechanism that periodically pumps chemicals ( bleach and corrosion inhibitor ) into the loop that keeps the water free from microbacterial contaminants.

And it doesn't take much chemical to accomplish that. Large buildings have to maintain logs and prove to the City that they're treating their Cooling tower water and show that their tower water is spot checked for Legionella bacteria on a regular basis.

At least they do in Houston. But then again this is Michigan, Flint and Detroit. I wouldn't be surpirsed if they simply can't afford to hire the inspectors needed to keep tabs on all the City's water towers.

Leginaires is also not contagious. Sounds like people are quick to jump to conculsions and blame the City.

The bolded is most likely the answer. Some water in this country would be deemed undrinkable from it's source, but is clean water in the end. we have the technology to easily turn even bacteria ridden water safe, but that does not mean they used it.

We have had problems in centex with water, they have inspectors who monitor ph level, bacteria and everything else, but all it takes is that one guy asleep on the job or no one inspecting it for what should be clean water to end up as undrinkable.

Not the emergency manager.

The first emergency manager nearly doubled Flint's debt before he quit.

As true as that may be, you still can't start feeding people poisoned water.

Problem is, I don't think that is really whats happening. Not everyone in Flint is having this problem. It seems more likely to me the pH level of the water is just too high and its corroding old lead pipes in some people's homes, causing lead contamination. The issue is that they knew this was the end result, wouldn't do anything about it, so people had to buy bottled water for two years. The real mystery to me is why they tolerated it this long. If I was faced with this situation then I'd organize a mob to pour that water down the governor's gullet until he agreed to fix it.

Re: 87 cases, 10 fatal, of Legionella bacteria found in Flint area; connection to wat

Lol ! They were in Crisis long before he stepped in.

I mean that's why they NEEDED a emergency manager to begin with.

Detroit spent millions more than they took in for nearly 10 years and continued to offer up insustainable pubic sector benefits while their tax base was shrinking.

They ignored their risng unfunded liabilities ( California anyone ? ) and did nothing to incentivize new private sector economic investment which would have led to New job creation.

And people like Kwame Kirkpatrick outright robbed the City. Kirkpatrick also stuck the City with a high interest loan that eats up a sizable portion of their budget.

Years, no Decades of corruption and destructive Democrat policies are to blame for the mess that is Detroit and Flint

Not the emergency manager.

While the story in the OP is tragic, your posts in this thread are laughable. Let them drink lead! Serves them right because liberals!

I agree.

But as I said earlier, Detroits Politicians cared very little about the welfare of their constituents.

They didn't even care about the sustainability of their own city. They cared about pushing the Democrat brand, about blindly perpetuing left wing policy above all else.

Loyal to their destructive ideology only, they refused to acknowledge the decay of their infrastructure and the crippling debt and unsustainable unfunded liabilities that led to the appointment of a emergency manager.

They blame others for their mess, like the poster that tried to push the blame on the City manager earlier

Put the people who ran Detroit into the ground in power in Washington and given enough time they would do the same to the whole of the US.

But what's else is new ? Ideologues are seriously dangerous people.

....

You keep talking about Detroit.
Detroit city water is fine.
It is the city of Flint whose Emergency City Manger switched from Detroit City water ( which is fine ) to water from the polluted Flint River to save money.

In Flint the mayor is no longer elected.( since the 1929 City Charter)
He/she was a member of the city council and is appointed by the City Council as the Council–manager.

The subject is the city of Flint , please try to stay on topic.

'Ya know, I am not afraid of ISIS. What I am afraid of is the Michigan Governor, who can do in one fell swoop what ISIS can only dream of.

I hear you.
The poisoning of the Flint water is downright frightening.

Now, a new fear has risen among residents of Flint, Michigan, who have been dealing with lead tainted water since 2014. A recent rise of Legionella or “Legionnaires’ Disease” has produced 87 cases of the disease, 10 of which were fatal in Genesee County.

The rare disease has been linked to poor management of water filtration systems and infrastructure, and the rise in cases came after Genesee County switched from Lake Huron to the Flint River for the city’s water supply. The money-saving move initially led to a spike of lead poisoning in children.

... the failure of the city to properly treat Flint River water could have resulted in the outbreak. In 47 percent of cases, the infected person’s water source was from the Flint River.

Legionella isn’t transferred by person to person contact, but by the inhalation of microscopic water drops. After infection, it is a serious bacterial lung condition that can lead to pneumonia-like symptoms and death if not treated.

It’s usually detected in natural bodies of water but can multiply rapidly if it contaminates artificial water supply systems. Larger buildings are more vulnerable to Legionella, because small amounts of the rare bacteria can spread quickly through complex water supply systems. Twelve New Yorkers were killed and 127 were left ill from an outbreak of Legionella in the South Bronx in August when the bacteria was discovered at 14 sites, including water cooling towers and hot water distribution systems.

When I was a kid, I could sometimes make a spark by skipping a stone off the Flint River.

That is very scary.

Re: 87 cases, 10 fatal, of Legionella bacteria found in Flint area; connection to wat

From this article:
"Research by Dr. Amy Prudent and myself and our team here at Virginia Tech published last year actually predicted that this sort of thing would happen," Edwards said. "Now, this is a new result, but the general idea is that the lack of corrosion control in the Flint system ate up the disinfectant, the chlorine that’s normally put in the water to kill these bacteria and it also caused the release of iron to the water. And so those two factors in our laboratory experiments dramatically increased the amount of Legionella that grew in water heaters and hot water systems."

Edwards clarifies that “it’s not 100% sure” that the outbreak of Legionnaires' is tied to the change to Flint River water, but the correlation “looks very strong.”

He does not believe that people in Flint are still at risk of the disease.

“We agree with the governor’s office and the Department [of Health & Human Services] that this is probably a problem of the past," he says. "They are being vigilant in looking at this and tracking this with the local health department, but there is every reason to think that the levels of Legionella in the system will now return back to where they were before the problems occurred in 2014 summer and 2015.”

Lol !

Yup, or give the Legionella bacteria one hell of a learning disorder.

It sounds like Detroit and parts of Michigan are just out and out 3rd world hell holes that cant even maintain basic City services.

Run into the ground by decades of corrupt Democrat Politicians and the Liberal ideology in general.

I used to watch Anthony Bourdain. I knew he was a hard core lefty but I was able to ignore his rare comments that exposed his ideology and enjoy his travels.

One episode he started talking about Detroit and told someone that Detroit's problems stem from it being " too black " for the rest of America.

Jeesus, well that settled it, no more Bourdain.

In your twisted world, every problem is the fault of a democrat somewhere.

People should be in jail and should be in jail for a long time. We all know they won't, however, just as the banksters responsible for the economic crash were never held responsible.

Negligent homicide of one person or robbery of one person, and you face the consequences. Do it to hundreds or thousands or millions at a time, and you don't.
