TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian President Bashar Assad attended Christmas choir preparations in an ancient church close to a frontline area in the capital Damascus where his army is engaged in heavy fighting with Takfiri terrorists, state media said Saturday.

State television showed footage of Assad and his wife Asma making the visit overnight to the Notre Dame de Damas Church, where he was shown chatting to the choir.

He took a seat near the altar and listened to a recital of Christmas poems in the main cathedral hall, Reuters reported.

The surroundings of the church in the old part of the ancient capital were hit by mortar fire on Friday, officials said.

The church is only 2 km away from Jobar, a neighborhood of the rebel-held eastern Ghouta suburb of Damascus that has been the focus for months of heavy aerial bombardments.

thats nice now if he would just quit with the whole dictator thing that would be swell

If we are trying to paint al-Assad as a good guy interested in peace, love and unity for Syria, it will take more than a church visit.

While the 'moderate opposition' AKA jihadists would burn down the church and crucify the clergy.

The worst thing I know about Assad is that he allowed CIA "black sites" for torure in Syria. Perhaps the CIA will reveal how much rent they paid for the services/facilities/personnel. These issues are like studying a few hundred turds to decide which one is the pretty one. The CIA says it's the "moderate rebels." or ISIS by any other name. The FSA seems to think Nusra and maybe one other are not too smelly, or ISIS by any other name. If the USA, via the Pentagon and the CIA, have only invested $1.5 billion in their own pretty turds, or ISIS by any other name, then perhaps the relevant leadership of these organizations needs a nose job for olfactory purposes, not cosmetic purposes. I didn't vote for that..

Nothing that man could do to absolve himself after his crimes against humanity, real torture and other murders and all that.

Swell it would be. But he must go to jail for life.

I don't really see how we can let him go anywhere but to The Hague. Especially, if it seemed that the Syrians were to let him be, the precedent of pardoning a dictator after even a fraction of that behavior is an impossible thought.

al-Assad is no different than any other ideological dictator in the greater Middle East region. Our issue is the likely fallout of doing anything to remove a tyrant, and end up starting another Iraq fiasco where weakness breads extremism. Russia helping al-Assad pretty much seals the deal on any expectation of change.

As for the CIA, they use plenty of nations and governments to do what they do... been going on since the days of the Cold War, and nothing surprises me about the CIA. Nothing.

Are the Saudi royals going to The Hague as well then?

Still presents the problem of what to do with Syria absent a central leader, the alternative is a carve up of the nation... into probably smaller ideological dictatorships, even if they do not start out that way.

Obama has promised to remove Assad so that "moderate rebels" can slaughter Christians.
Al Qaeda led rebel force groups have also reportedly vowed to continue their attacks on Christians as soon as the United States "liberates" the country from it's President Bashir al-Assad.

Yesterday Republican Senator John McCain inserted an amendment into a resolution approving military force in Syria with a goal of shifting the power on the battle field from the Assad regime and to rebel forces.
Obama wants these Christians to be killed. Assad Wants these Christians to live.

What behaviour is that? Specifically, with corrobating links. If it is about shooting protestors, keep in mind that Assad stated they were foreign financed forces of de-stabilization, and CIA, NED, USAID and Freedom House money trails seem to justify that assessment. I remember Qaddaffi geing demonized by Western Media for attacking protestors and the protestors turned out to be Western financed ISIS terrorists, just exactly what Qaddaffi had stated. We sure fixed Libya, didn't we. Screw that free housing, free education, free energy, and food and all the other social advantages of the "Jamariyha" (sp) type government gave Libyans. Now they've got "freedom." Well, there's chaos, death, destruction and mayhem, but everyone is free to enjoy those changes that we have forced upon them. I guess that must be what "freedom" means in diplomatic circles.

The alternative is to carve it into fiefdoms that will privatise PIPELINES to Europe and kill Russian exports of petro-products to Europe. The Economic Spectrum of Full Spectrum Dominance, don't ya' know? The sand pile problems are Mega Energy Geo-Political Strategies and we are the enforcement arm of that Economic Spectrum. It's going to bite us. Good results never follow evil actions.

The place should be made a UN protectorate.

So UN occupational forces and the final destruction of Syria as a nation opened up to western corporations to loot what is left and install a puppet government? Nice.

Then can Obama go to jail as well?

I've always thought we should have a two term limit for politicians - one term in office and one term in prison.

President Assad was more than a church visitor when Western nations began supporting an insurgency to overthrow his government. He was the protectorate of the Christian community in Syria, and those Christians have appealed to the US to STOP trying to overthrow their protectorate!

Who's we? He goes there when Bush and Obama go there.

That's not in Russia's interest, and won't be happening. I can see how frustrated you are, but watch for continued backlash from Russia and China on US interferences going forward. The days of US global dominance are winding down. It's the price of abuse of power.
