House Republicans Fighting Back Against (Perceived) War On Christmas
This would be just another sign of how ludicrously stupid and worthless waste of protoplasm this minority of religious freaks in Congress are were it not for the fact that they more and more resemble islamist fundamentalists in attitude and objective.
Behold the core message:
And here is the actual proposed resolution:
Thomas Jefferson (someone rightwingers love to incorrectly insist was one of our "framers") refused to continue the practice (started by Washington and continued by Adams) of issuing religious holiday proclamations (christian only, of course) because he rightly realized that while those didn't represent a literal violation of the first amendment prohibition on Congress to "make no law respecting the establishment of religion" it certainly violated the spirit of the "wall of separation between church and state" that he fervently believed should be observed and represented the first step toward tearing down that proscription. This would be the "camel's nose" in a steady goose-step march toward establishing the warped version of christianity held by a minority of extremist christians in this country. Unless Congress plans to make this sort of resolution for every religion represented in this country as well as one for "no religion" (a proclamation recognizing rationalism would do) they should steer clear of this abyss. In fact, it would be impossible to do this so any attempt should be thwarted.
And just to remind ourselves just how desperately ridiculous (as all fanatics are at base) these people are:
But being idiotic doesn't mean they're any less dangerous. There are far too many armed religious nutcases (recent example, Robert Lewis Dear) who actually lap this crap up and they are not funny.

The resolution would not only "recognize the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas," but would also "strongly disapprove of attempts to ban references to Christmas."
And here is the actual proposed resolution:
RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas.
Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and
Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment of the Constitution, in prohibiting the establishment of religion, would not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives—
(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;
(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and
(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.

The move comes after evangelicals had a strong reaction to Starbucks' new holiday cup. The controversy began after Starbucks released just simple red cups for the holidays instead of cups with seasonal greetings or pictures on them. Some saw the move as another example of the "war on Christmas"
