A group of armed protesters who wanted to “show force” gathered outside a Texas mosque Saturday in response rumors about Syrian refugees and Sharia law.The group, calling itself the Bureau of American Islamic Relations, stationed itself outside the Islamic Center of Irving carrying signs with messages like, “Stop the Islamization of America,” according to the Dallas Morning News. A video taken at the mosque shows a man dressed in black with his face masked carrying a rifle.
The group’s leader told the News they were upset because they had heard rumors of a Sharia court at the mosque and the prospect of letting Syrian refugees in. They also claimed members of the local Muslim community had made death threats against Irving’s mayor, Beth Van Duyne, earlier this year. The News found no evidence that this claim was true.
When asked by the News why his group was armed, organizer David Wright said the weapons were “mostly for self protection,” but then added, “But I’m not going to lie. We do want to show force. We’re not sitting ducks.”
He then added,“We don’t want people to think we’re out to kill people or shoot people. It would be ridiculous to protest Islam without defending ourselves.”
The town of Irving gained notoriety earlier this year when police arrested a Muslim school boy who had made a clock at home and brought it to school, accusing him of making a “hoax bomb.”
Van Duyne made a name for herself by fighting against a non-existent threat that Muslims were bringing Sharia law to Irving.
“Recently, there have been rumors suggesting that the City of Irving has somehow condoned, approved or enacted the implementation of a Sharia Law Court in our City. Let me be clear, neither the City of Irving, our elected officials or city staff have anything to do with the decision of the mosque that has been identified as starting a Sharia Court,” Van Duyne had written in a Facebook post that was publicized by Fox News and Glenn Beck.

The American fascists are out in force.

Emotions are a tad high right about now. The horrors that unfolded last week are still kinda fresh in peoples' minds.

So? Freedom of expression.

You don't have to like it, but they have a right to do it.

The horrors of something a world away these folks never experienced is so fresh they'd do something this idiotic?

Ah... why is this always the argument?

No one is saying they don't "Have the right".

But it's also freedom of expression to call them dumbasses for doing it.

Soooo, what part of "you don't have to like it" indicates my advocating a prohibition against "calling them dumbasses?"

This is only newsworthy because it arouses P.C. sentiment in order to create more controversy and sell advertising. IMO it has a secondary goal of perpetuating the crap we see with BLM and the campus "hunger" protest of stirring up opposition to limit expression people don't like.

Again, no one here is saying they dont have the freedom or right to do their ****ing bigoted actions, and no one is calling for there to be a law to stop them....

Great. So what IS the point of your OP then?

Great. So what IS the point of your OP then?

"The American fascists are out in force."
Driven by bigotry, xenophobia, and Islamophobia and the only action they can resort to is to validate their bigotry, xenophobia, and bigotry by a show of force. Lets come together as a nation and as basic humans to speak out against such petty actions these "protestors" are exemplifying.

That those dumbasses are dumbasses.
Some people are so flagrantly stupid that it's a shame their viewpoint gets any notice. That's one downside of the internet.

So then what do we call the student protesters and Black Lives Matter groups (to name just a few) who cloak themselves in righteousness but act in the same bigoted, racist, and anti-liberty ways that you are condemning in this OP? Communists? Anarchists? Fascists too?

Good point! The same can be said for the snowflakes on campuses asking for "safe zones" and demanding freedom of expression only when it agrees with THEIR point of view. Otherwise, they expect people to "shut up!"

So using your constitutional rights is "fascist" ?

when did BLM ever show up with assault rifles outside a religous minorities place of worship? If they did the police wouldve shot them on sight and you would be here defending the police. Wouldn't you?

we have our safe zones, you have your neo-nazi rallies? is that it? thats your equivalence?

Look, I'll be the first to say that those people are a bit over the top, but labeling them bigots and xenophobes is just as over the top if you ask me. Radical Islamic terrorism is very real and when nearly every terrorist attack over the last 15 years or so has been committed in the name of Islam, and millions of Muslims world wide consider the United States the enemy of Islam, you're going to get people like those protestors.

When protesters like that bunch cross the line from protesting, to vandalism and violence, then it's time to write about them... but until then, they are just a bunch of people scared about the countries future and the future for their children and families..

Actually no. I would not be "defending the police" if they shot an innocent person. I've caught flack from several conservative members of the forum for pointing out instances shown on video where the police started an encounter with deadly force when it was unnecessary.

SCOTUS has validated a right to bear arms, I support the Second Amendment; so if BLM members marched bearing arms, then more power to em.

My equivalence is that EVERYONE has a right to peaceable assembly, your emotionally charged false labeling notwithstanding.

Simply carrying a firearm does not denote "violent" assembly, since it is the right I support guaranteed from government interference under the Second Amendment.

Well, I'm no 'snowflake' but I'll say people should shut up when they're obviously being stupid. Just being dumb, too, and even just uninformed. In fact, most people should shut up.
You and I excluded, of course.

They are protesting and following (while they, those doing the following, are armed with weapons) people who have done nothing wrong.......

So using your constitutional rights is "fascist" ?
:doh Nope. Thats not what I said.

:doh Wait, so now your point is, what exactly? What are the parallels you are trying to draw?

Yes, we have the right to point out how bigoted those fascists are

You don't have to like it, but we have the right to do it.

PS - using guns to intimidate others is not protected by the constitution

Just remember, if you have the right to insult and berate people, people have the right to insult and berate you right back.

You are not above the rules you claim that everybody else has to follow.

Otherwise, if you, then that's hypocrisy, which negates any substance or credibility to your claims and we don't have to follow them.

All things being equal.

I'll promise to remember that if you promise to point out where I said anybody does not have the right to do that

What would happen if the Americans being stalked stood their ground?

PS - using guns to intimidate others is not protected by the constitution

Like the free exercise of any right, the subjective feelings of offense or intimidation by an observer is not dispositive.

Words can only hurt you if you allow them to, otherwise they are just noise coming out of someone's mouth.

Seeing someone carrying (but not brandishing) a firearm is only intimidating if you allow it to be, otherwise it is just a fellow citizen exercising their constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

Carrying firearms is constitutionally protected.

Did they:
a) Threaten to shoot those people?
b) Fire those weapons at any time?
c) Point their weapons at anyone?
d) Point their weapons at the Mosque?

In my opinion, those people carrying firearms was there way of saying that they are willing to fight for their country and won't tolerate Islamic terrorism.

Stalking is a crime and words can be used against you in a court of law
