Proposal would allow DC 16-year-olds to vote for president in 2016

I think the word liberal means different things in the US and Canada. And to tell the truth, there's been times when I didn't like the Liberal Party's platform or leader and I sat out elections. They've been known, on occasion, to get above themselves. I'd never vote for the NDP, they're too socialist, and I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a brother in the Conservative Party.

i've completely given up voting for Democrats or Republicans .. .except in local elections where party doesn't matter that much, if at all.

I don't know what the differences in liberalism between here and there are... but I do know liberals ( and conservatives for that matter) change the definitions to suit their whims over the years.
in any event, i'm solid with anyone, liberal, conservative, or otherwise, who supports and defends individual rights... I don't like selective support, or outright disrespect of those rights.

It's about laws for me. There needs to be a damn good reason for anything to be illegal and just being annoying or endangering yourself doing something stupid isn't enough. Too many laws. You want to ride your bike without a helmet, that's up to you. You want to blast your crappy music on the sidewalk, I might confront you but damned if I'd want a law against it. You want to lay on the lawn smoking pot and seeing bunnys and sailing ships in the clouds, go for it. You want to marry your gay boyfriend, I don't care. No laws, not unless someone's being harmed. For me, legal is the default setting.
Conservatives want morality to be legislated. If someone should do something, it becomes a law that they must. If they shouldn't, it becomes a law that they can't.
That's my take. And having said that, I don't involve myself in politics much. Except to oppose pretty much anything being legislated.

I wonder what party the 16 year olds would vote for. I also wonder what party the author of this proposal belongs to.

I wonder if the partisan aspect affects your opinion of it. Would you support it if you thought those 16-year-olds would vote the way you do?

No way. As it has been said before in this thread. 16 year olds are too stupid to vote.

I'm guessing you really screwed up at age 16.
There's a number of other countries with a voting age 16. Seems not to have been disastrous.

Not at all.

16 year olds are in 10th grade and maybe taking their first Government class.

They know nothing about how the government works not to mention who the candidates are or what they stand for, and you want these know-nothings voting?

Again, most young people vote Democrat, so I wonder what political party the author of this ascribes to.

we're not so far apart really.

you'd make a horrible Republican.. and a horrible Democrat.... so we'd probably get along just fine:lol:

Why not? Many kids their age move out, work, pay taxes, etc.

If they have their own home and pay taxes they might as well vote. Personally I doubt their experience, learning and maturity are very promising. Their vote will probably be more negative than positive in effect.

Oh.there is no question that people want the young to be allowed to vote are those that hope to profit by it.

The same can be said about a lot of people who are much older. Those types of arguments hold no sway to me.

WASHINGTON - When Americans go to the polls to vote in 2016, there's a chance that 16-year-olds in Washington, D.C. could also be casting their ballots. On Tuesday, three D.C. City Council members proposed lowering the federal voting age in D.C. from 18 to 16.45

Ward 6 Council member Charles Allan is the chief author behind the Youth Vote Amendment Act of 2015. He said Tuesday that there's nothing in the 26th Amendment that forbids younger Americans from voting, and that the Constitution only ensures that those 18 or older have the right to vote.

Council members David Grosso and Brianne Nadeau co-introduced the legislation. Click here to read it.

Advocates hope the idea would encourage change in civic involvement in the District, where just 38 percent of registered voters turned out for the city's last mayoral election.

If the legislation passes, D.C. wouldn't be the first to lower the voting age. In Tacoma Park, Md., the minimum age to vote in municipal elections is 16.
