WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - The Obama administration is expected to announce on Friday a decision to deploy a small number of special operations forces in an advisory role to Syria, U.S. administration and congressional sources said. One source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the number of special operations forces to be deployed was "tiny" but did not give a number.
The sources said the move reflected a wider strategy of strengthening moderate rebels in Syria even as Washington intensifies its efforts to find a diplomatic solution to end to the four-and-a-half year Syrian civil war.

They've probably been there awhile. Canadian special forces (JTF 2) have been there for months.

Edit- apparently this happened in a whole other place. Sorry.

We should leave the middle east completely. We should support Israel and completely ignore the rest of it. Instead we are fooling around where we don't belong with no possibility of fixing anything because we aren't committed to fixing it. If you want to deploy military, you need to deploy it to win, not to put a bandaid on an open artery. The president should be ashamed of himself.

How many times do POTUS's (first GWB and now Obama) have to completely screw up the Middle East before they learn to leave it alone.

It is a quagmire that cannot be controlled by the West.

How effective can "leading from behind" be? :boom

Obviously, it not effective. That is why I don't approve of the U.S. taking half measures. Either we deploy military to win or we don't deploy it at all. What we are doing is truly stupid.

Let's not leave out the fact that Obama has lied about every policy in all M.E. countries just like all other politicians. Yet another proven case of a president putting his image and legacy above our great young soldiers who must now die for a empty, lost cause.

A specious foreign policy if there ever was one...

So pointless.

Our efforts to train foreign troops have yielded little fruit. One recent program spent 500 million to train 4 or 5 troops.

What are 50 special forces guys going to meaningfully do in Syria? Is ISIS even our fight?

It depends on what they are doing and how they were supported. It wasn't that many more SF guys leading the Northern Alliance and calling in air strikes that got the ball rolling in kicking AQ and the Taliban out of Afgjanistan. And there is a huge difference between training troops and sending them out to fight and actually leading into combat. One is usually not very successful and the other can be very effective if the conditions are right. Also having CCTs or SF JTACS on the ground can greatly increase the effectiveness of those air strikes.

Here are McCain's moderate terrorists putting women and children in cages as human shields against Russian/Syrian airstrikes:
