Johnston police said the driver approached 15-year-old Christian, a student with special needs, after he failed to follow the bus driver’s instructions regarding a seat assignment.

Police said the student directed an inflammatory comment toward the bus driver who grabbed the student's coat, hit the boy in the face and pushed him to the floor.

Ady Serdarevic was sitting next to Christian.
"He hit him in the head, and he has a disability in his head. [Scarbrough] supposed to be watching us, not hurting us,” Serdarevic said.

Scarbrough was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being held pending bail of $2,000.

Among other things, that seems like a pretty low bail given the situation.

Bail ends up something negotiated (for lack of a better word) based on so many factors and between representation of the people and the accused. I agree that $2000 is fairly low for assault on a special needs kid, but that is not the big part of this story.

Our issue is the condition of the incident. While it is good to see the bus driver charged with assault and child endangerment, we are still at a point where we have to look at whatever the circumstances were that allowed for that bus driver to be with those kids in the first place. If it comes down to a bus driver simply making a series of terrible decisions, then so be it. He will have his day in court which is how this is supposed to work.

He better hope he has a good lawyer, he is going to need it...
