The United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of lifting the blockade against Cuba Tuesday, with only the U.S. and Israel voting against. The initiative has been backed by the majority of members for the last 23 years.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented a report that concludes that the economic sanctions, which have caused some US$833.8 billion in damage to the Caribbean island, should be lifted.

Moments before the vote took place, the U.S. representative to the U.N. declared that his country would vote against lifting the sanctions, saying that it was unfortunate that Cuba had presented a motion that was “almost identical” to the one the year before.

His speech followed that of Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who demanded that the U.S. end the “flagrant, massive and systematic violation of human rights of all Cubans” by terminating the half-century financial and economic blockade. Rodriguez pointed out the company Electra refused to supply Cuban hospitals with cancer drugs.

Once again the UN has voted in favor of ending the Cuban blockade and once again the only two powers to vote against the measure were the USA and Israel. This time it was a bit more interesting because their was speculation that the US might actually abstain from the vote, but as we can see that did not happen.

It's just going it's normal way since the USA started normalization. In a few years the Castros will be gone and there will be even less interest in what goes on there. Unless the Cubans do something really dumb

A lot of the UN members are from socialist and communist countries so of course they are going to support Cuba against the United States.

which is why America should never be a part of the United nations.

the UN is a complete and utter joke that has no real teeth.

When you really evaluate all that is going on with Cuba, this is nonsensical.

This UN vote based on a proposal is more or less ceremonial, as just about anyone that wants to trade with Cuba can. When you look at all the current trade and economic activity between Cuba and so many nations (UN member nations at that) then this proposal just comes down to a reversal of existing UN & US policy that is not all that enforced anyway.

One, the UN nor the US is really engaged in a "blockade" of Cuba. The US does still have economic and trade sanctions and it will take Congress to undo that, but we even have some trade relations with Cuba (even though it is restricted.)

Two, this embargo bull**** has gone on long enough and has not achieved hardly any of the listed reasons for having it in the first place. Over the years the effort to isolate Cuba has not really worked when you look at all the nations Cuba actively imports from and exports to. I put this in another thread on the subject yesterday. China, Venezuela, Italy, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia, and numerous others already trade with Cuba. Exchanging everything from Industrial Equipment to Food Products to Mineral Goods.

This US policy did not work, Cuba is still around, and did not make any of the desired changes. Move on and try a little diplomacy. The fact that the US and Israel voted against this shows of useless this effort has become and how useless the UN truly is.

A joke we are paying for. If we don't want to do business with Cuba it's absolutely none of the business of the Useless Nitwits.

I don't think trade was the impetus, really. There's been a movement underway in black America to open it up to tourism because they want access to the women and the beaches. Another Dominican Republic, so to speak.

its a well known fact in economics that blockades do more harm than good. i just wished more was leveraged in return for sanctions reliefs.

And at least one UN member is a fascist nation. My oh my, what should be done? Fascists and communists, the world has gone to hell.

It is absurd and unjust to keep the embargo against Cuba. Once again, I am ashamed of my government and its cruel ally Israel.

Yeah sure. Let's give aid to a government that keeps its people in abject poverty. And Israel is a great ally, one of the best.

Are you suggesting that Israel does not keep the Palestinians in abject poverty?

In case you don't remember, Israel has turned back with force at least 2 international efforts to bring food and medicine to the Palestinians.

When the US and Israel stand alone in voting for or against something, you know it has to be progress they are blocking.

Israel has every right to. it did NOT start this war. And to claim that Israel has to is just another dirty rotten trick to play against Israel.

I have no more to say to you as i know where you are coming from.

If you want a reputation as a truly moronic moron, you are required to stand up and prove it publicly, repeatedly. USA and Israeli reputations are proven, again, don't ya' know?.

I can't imagine why anybody cares what the UN does. I think we should put the whole organization to sleep.
