Oregon gunman singled out Christians during rampage

Do you want my personal opinion? The Second is viewed as our only guarantor. Also, in a world viewed as increasingly violent the notion that some majority should sacrifice safety to the security of the few is essentially taboo; I mean, it's a subject that can't even be broached in public. But that said, gun control is here, we have it, and it's never going anywhere. In some states, it's virtually impossible to obtain a handgun permit. And it's impossible to purchase an assault rifle. But the sportsman gets along fine. People have their rifles and shotguns for sporting purposes and are largely content to permit only law enforcement handguns.

In the days before universal prosperity, guns were viewed differently. There were no self-defense weapons, there was no need of them, and every sporting arm had a purpose. As a conservative, and a 2nd Amend-er, I'm not always happy with the NRA's response because I feel we have responsibility to ensure safety. But I also think we have to find a way to re-institute civility, and divisive politics, which only fuel the hate, do not help. Because there will always be that slightly deranged malcontent looking for something to hang his hate on no matter what it is. How do we keep these people from falling through the cracks? Greater scrutiny, imo, it's the only reasonable response.

Sir -Yes I was interested in your opinion. Thank you for the well thought out post.

Yea. But when society is so willing to create things to hang our hate on, we shouldn't object when some do precisely that.

Honestly I think our society is too willing to make themselves victims. It probably never occurred to this guy that he didn't have s girlfriend because he was a freak who came on too strong. Not that there was anything wrong with those who rejected him.

It actually has a lot to do I think with our loss of convention. Conventions are like unwritten rules, for example, keeping your pants up in public is one of standard conventions. While wearing them around the middle of your butt, is to defy convention. Conventions are the means by which we socially organize society; how strictly we adhere to them is a matter of conviction. And the strength of our convictions is entirely based on the ability of parents, and others, to impress upon us this need of convention.

When we defy convention we are essentially saying, "Screw you and your society."

But today conventions and convictions are meaningless; the left's made chopped liver out of all them. They belittle anyone who holds to a societal convention. Or possesses some strength of conviction that would in any way inhibit their ability to influence and mold.

This is not just a case of frustration turned anger, but actually acting on it. Years ago the response would have been, "Oh no, people just don't do things like that." But it's not that way anymore, and it's not that young people are unaware, it's that they willfully throw these conventions to the wind. They willfully violate them.

Couple that with our very divisive politics, and the deranged minds of our drug culture, and we have a problem. Because it's only a matter of time before people, usually young males, find something to hang their hate on. And defy convention to actually act on it.

Please cite a gun law that would have prevented the shooter from having a gun.
Easy. Guns are not allowed to be owned or carried by civilians.

"But what about ..."

Nope. In the real world, i.e. countries not affected with American gun fetishes, mass shootings are not common.

Ignoring of course that gasoline and fertilizer is. Or the fact that mental health care is also common. Also ignoring the fact that we aren't the same nation in that we cannot be compared with any other nation on guns or social structure or culture or government.

And what happens to our government when one can just erase a constitutional right? And NOT based on any logical argument and WITHOUT exhausting all other options in terms of figuring out what is wrong?
