'Police shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire on a homeless man during a hostage situation in front of the Sao Paulo Cathedral, Friday.

The gunman, 49-year-old Luiz Antonio da Silva, reportedly took a woman hostage in the cathedral earlier in the day. When a homeless man named Erasmo Francisco Rodrigues de Lima saw the incident unfolding he tried to intervene. Silva and Lima got into a brief scuffle and Silva shot Lima several times, killing him on the steps of the cathedral in front of a crowd of onlookers. Police then opened fire on Silva, killing him instantly.

According to Brazilian authorities, Silva had a large criminal record that included theft, damage of property and causing bodily harm. He had served 22 years in prison.'

He may have saved that woman's life. Well done, sir. You demonstrate well that one does not need to have wealth to be among the noblest of us.

Well said.

I can only dream of going out like he did...dying while saving someone else.

True enough. All men die - a few die well.

I met bums with more heart in their inflamed swollen gout pinky toe than any of our politicians ever hope to have. I think most bums are more noble and majestic than most of society. Their heart is in the right place and money just doesnt mean anything to them. (except maybe a few beers)

Cops should build repor and friendships with bums. Its the bums who see the little back alley deals go down and what street the criminal ran down. Wanna know whats happening on the streets? Ask someone who lives their full time!
