John Boehner Embarrassed: His Whip Team Couldn’t Find Votes to Reelect Him Speaker Last Week

House Speaker Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) had been planning to call up on the House floor last week a measure from Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) that would have removed him as Speaker of the House if it succeeded—intending to embarrass Meadows—but abandoned the plan after his entire leadership structure learned that they did not have the votes to re-elect him as Speaker before the August recess.
“[House Majority Leader Kevin] McCarthy was making phone calls—he was whipping it—and so was [House Majority Whip] Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA)” a senior conservative movement leader who’s had many personal and direct discussions with various House GOP members about this told Breitbart News in an interview last week.
“I know members personally who were called by Steve Scalise. So they had the entire leadership whip team frantically making phone calls to members to whip the vote because they wanted to attempt to embarrass Meadows and call the vote [on Wednesday last week] so it’s not hanging over Boehner’s head.
“What they found out was the exact opposite. They found out bad things would happen, that literally they would be calling the vote without knowing what would happen. Therefore, they did not call the vote and now they have this issue hanging over John Boehner’s head for the next five weeks.”

John Boehner Couldn?t Find Votes to Reelect Him Speaker

Me thinks the guy has reason to sweat. One can hope.

You'd rather have Pelosi? Because that's what would happen. There's not enough votes to elect any Republican since they are so divided, which means the Dems would have the largest voting block to elect Pelosi.

Yeah... great plan.

I am not sure it would go to Pelosi. I think it still goes to the majority.

It goes to whomever gets the most votes. It does not have to be a member of the majority, and it doesn't even have to be a member of Congress.

What makes you think Pelosi would get the most votes?

All Dems would vote for her, while the Reps are divided. She would get the most, not a majority but the most.

I see what you are saying. Maybe Boehner will get the message then.

John Boehner the Democratic Speaker of the House, needs to go! Right along with McConnell.

What makes you think Pelosi would get the most votes?
Aprox 59 more votes on the repub side - 247 R - 188 D-
And he cannot get enough votes to retain his position. May be wrong here but Pelosi would get all 188 Dems.

Hah!

I'm no fan of Spkr Boehner, but I empathize with the difficulty of his job.

Getting the GOP on one page is like herding cats!

I see what you are saying. Maybe Boehner will get the message then.

Boehner understands that. What worries me, is do the rest of the Republican horde have a clue what they're doing, which is giving the Power to set the House agenda... TO THE DEMOCRATS.

It goes to whomever gets the most votes. It does not have to be a member of the majority, and it doesn't even have to be a member of Congress.

Only for the Repubs.....last time they voted. The Repubs were divided and split 3 ways. Boehner won. Repubs are the Majority and the Hold the Speaker position.

This type of vote doesn't count the Demos.

Possible on a split vote within the Republican party??
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives

The Speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the chamber. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, which states in part, "The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker..." The current Speaker is John Boehner, a Republican who represents Ohio's 8th congressional district. The Constitution does not require that the Speaker be an elected House Representative, though all Speakers have been an elected Member of Congress.[1]

Seems they have been here before. ;)

Why John Boehner Will Win Reelection as House Speaker Today
Jan 6, 2015, 7:05 AM ET

So far, of the 246 House Republicans who will be sworn into office today, just 10 have publicly stated they will not vote for Boehner: Reps. Jim Bridenstine, Thomas Massie, Ted Yoho, Louie Gohmert, Dave Brat, Walter Jones, Paul Gosar, Steve King, Marlin Stutzman and Rep.-elect Gary Palmer.

That means 18 other members would have to turn on Boehner to force a second ballot. But even then, it’s unclear whether Boehner would drop out of the race or work to strike a deal with some of his disenchanted colleagues.

In 2013, Boehner felt the heat when a dozen House Republicans opposed him, but he narrowly escaped, winning 220 votes for speaker (a simple majority of all members voting is required).....snip~
