Sony Pictures hackers invoke 9/11 while threatening theaters showing"The Interview"

Re: Sony Pictures hackers invoke 9/11 while threatening theaters showing"The Intervie

any 1 else want to see the movie now just to spite these bastards?

Yes. This makes me angry. Americans just seem be rolling over and letting it happen. Sony should rent out the Kennedy Center and hold the biggest movie premiere the world has ever seen to a sold out crowd and make millions just to spite....whoever they are. Who are "they" anyway? Nobody seems to know for sure...which is also very troubling. Why don't they know who or where the hackers are? They don't even know if it was a group of teenagers in their parents basement or an organized foreign government sabotage or what. I'm starting to lean towards the former.

I'm curious too. But "dear leader" is a nasty adolescent pissant, so maybe this is what he thinks is "getting even."

And maybe it is too if a major corporation can be made to bend the knee. You know, the e-mail leaks were just salacious, and I enjoyed some of them. But Social Security #s and bank accounts and this are serious.

Sony Pictures hackers invoke 9/11 while threatening theaters that show ‘The Interview’

On Tuesday, the group claiming to be responsible for the massive Sony hack posted a message on text sharing site Pastebin threatening violence against theaters showing the movie 'The Interview,' the controversial Sony comedy action film about planning an assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The group (or someone claiming to represent the group) invoked the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while threatening screenings of the movie, which is scheduled to be widely released on Christmas Day. I hope that this film breaks all box office records.

As predicted Sony caved in to blackmail after a lot of damaging information was stolen.

Lack of cybersecurity or plain hubris on the part of the executives?

I fear this country has lost its first cyberwar attack. Now, anyone and I mean anyone can do what the North Koreans did knowing that their victim will cave in to blackmail as Sony has done. How sad for us all.

But Sony just caved in to blackmail. How predictable and humbling for a giant corporation to have been so easily cowered.

Do we know that our government did not warn them against showing the movie. If the movie was shown and some nut shot up a cinema lawyers would bankrupt the company. Others would rail against big business caring more about dollars than about innocent lives.

Absolutely loved this story. I wish more theaters would do this, instead this little texas theater will be so ronery.

And it's funny that you mention it, because South Park has actually had two episodes (well, technically 4 episodes, both were two parters) dealing with terrorism enduced censorship. This (slightly altered) quote from the first one would've been nice for someone to convince Sony of initially..

"Kyle: Yes, people can get hurt. That's how terrorism works. But if you give into that, Sony, you're allowing terrorism to work. Do the right thing here. "

Unfortunately, they didn't do the right thing. Showing us how wonderfully true the "I learned something today" speech was from 201 (an episode which, ironically, was censored because people threatened violence over the show)

Kyle: You see, I learned something today. Throughout this whole ordeal, we've all wanted to show things that we weren't allowed to show. But it wasn't because of some magic goo. It was because of the magical power of threatening people with violence. That's obviously the only true power. If there's anything we've all learned, it's that terrorizing people works.

Jesus: That's right. Don't you see, gingers? If you don't want to be made fun of anymore, all you need are guns and bombs to get people to stop.

Santa: That's right, friends. All you need to do is instill fear and be willing to hurt people and you can get whatever you want. The only true power is violence.

Stan: [smiles and tilts his head to one side] Yeah.

Yeah....

Yeah....

Yes, I remember with Comedy Central censored them showing Mohamed. Shameful.

Well, now that the precedent has been set, I can imagine that there'll be ever more persistent and aggressive hacker attacks on nations and corporations for whatever agenda or extortion temporarily fancies the hackers.

Another step down the path to info-wars with the general public Internet users caught in the middle.
You think that each nation is going to raise their own versions of 'The Great Firewall of China'?
You think that each corporation is going to raise their own versions of 'The Great Firewall of China'?

Seems pretty likely.

North Korea made anonymous look like thier bitch.

Re: Sony Pictures hackers invoke 9/11 while threatening theaters showing"The Intervie

If this is a state sponsored cyber terrorism on a US subsidiary, and thus US citizens, should the us govt be criticized for failing to protect them. And expected to respond as if this was an act of war?

Re: Sony Pictures hackers invoke 9/11 while threatening theaters showing"The Intervie

Oh for God's sake. The government hasn't even officially announced it's NK and people are already bitching they aren't doing anything about it. We have to be patient. It will be paid back in kind.

I predict NK will eventually get some kind of speciallity virus or malware like Iran did a few years back. I don't care how many cyber troops NK has they still aren't as spohisticated as the rest of the world.

I actually believe this may have been done for hire anyway.

And it's a blessing in disguise. Our corps need to get serious about security and this should be a wake up call.

Youre right. We should trust our govt to do the right thing.

No, but it should be a wake-up call.
