Major Police Operation - Sydney Police End Hostage Situation

I wouldn't give props just yet, we need to know what happened.

We need to know the justification for storming the building.

Did he start shooting?

Was there a definite, imminent execution of a hostage about to take place?

Did the hostage taker lose control of the situation and the police took the opportunity to go in?

Until we know what the justification was for storming the building, it may be that police action caused the death of a hostage when other alternatives were still open to police.

Not saying that's the case, but we need to know.

Three hostages were killed during the rescue.....but by who?

Seems like this Monis guy was a well known bad apple with a number of different issues. I wonder if his liberty even in light of his involvement in scores of rather serious matters was due to "appeasement" politics.

I doubt it. I just don't think they had enough evidence to lock him up for any meaningful duration.

It appears that the hostage taker began firing which forced the Police to go dynamic and enter the building.

Amazing heroism from those that went in there, it was a very intense firefight.

I'm so saddened by the loss of life.

You were right to be cautious yesterday - I was initially relieved that more people hadn't died as these things usually end very badly, particularly when they involve terrorists or wanna-be terrorists as we've seen in Pakistan overnight.

I just wanted to add that there are reports that when six additional hostages escaped, the terrorist got agitated and one of the staff or the owner of the cafe charged the terrorist trying to disarm him and was killed in the process and when the shots were heard the police went in.

I wouldn't be in such a hurry to call this guy a terrorist.

Not every Muslim who does bad **** is a terrorist.

I understand that this fella had a history of opposing Western military involvement in the Arab/Muslim world, but I've seen nothing that indicates he was interested in actively attacking the West.

This isn't the first time some loose cannon under tremendous legal pressure took hostages or killed people.

Bradley William Stone recently killed a bunch of people in Pennsylvania because things weren't going his way.

Was he a terrorist too?

Or maybe not a terrorist, but he was a Marine veteran of the war in Iraq.

Do we need to get all hysterical and start looking at curtailing the rights and civil liberties of Marine war veterans, cuz, you know, they could snap.
