Walmart Threatened Workers For Trying To Organize, Judge Rules

I hate chains of any kind, generally speaking. I love to give my business to privately owned (insert business here) instead of the chains, any of the chains. We have an independent pharmacy still that still exists near me, right at the corner of Walgreens and CVS. I always go to them (little guy) even though I'm hosing myself financially. My parents always frequented the small stores of any kind as well. I miss those days too.

i like a couple of chains; mostly restaurants. it is cool when the GF needs something for her apartment and you just take off on foot and end up at a store that specializes in that, though. and honestly, it's not that much more expensive most of the time.

Yup, I also will go to the restaurant chains at times (hence my "generally speaking").

I don't dislike WalMart any more or less than any of them. I just don't care for the atmosphere in there which is why I don't go. Diapers and formula brought me in them a lot, and I wasn't a big fan. My husband does go in for ammo though, and he also buys lightbulbs and cleaning products there.
 
it depends on what is needed for the store. it also depends on the number of positions available and who wants them.
no everyone wants to be the department supervisor in auto or sporting goods.

as you move up the number of positions narrows. IE only 1 store manager and maybe 2 or 3 assistant managers.
it scales downward from there.

not even willing to give an inch? come on, man. we're all workers here. our kids will be workers. i don't want them working in a labor market in which they are treated like toilet paper. increased job security, a regular shift, and upward mobility is not too much to ask.

That makes no sense. People who work require less public assistance than those who do not. So you must be thanking WalMart for hiring people who would otherwise be unemployed.

look, i'm not arguing that we should seize and liquidate the ****ing chain. just raise prices a little bit, leave the base salary where it is, and give people more opportunities for promotion and raises. i don't see how that could even be slightly controversial.
Its not controversial at all if its your company Since its not, it really none of your business.

then tell them to get a good education and good job training or get training in a field that has those qualities and then they won't have to worry about it.
it isn't about giving anything.

you can only have so many upper management positions. you can only have so many supervisors.
for a spot to open up someone else has to leave.

now there might be positions within your current role that you can get.

for instance my company has tiers that allow you to move up in.

so you can start off as a computer operator I > II > SR > analyst. from there your next step is either supervisor or manager.
for those you might have to move to a different location or move to the main data center.

not all companies are like that. I am sure that walmart has X positions available for certain departments. IE you can go from electronics to electronics casher to sup to manager.
only if the position is available and you have shown the skill and aptitude to it.

you might have to go to a position that you don't like to move up like night shift stocking supervisor.

either way, it doesn't matter. treat your workers badly enough for long enough, and they will unionize.
 
they swear by walmart because they can't afford anything else, due in part to wage stagnation.

i don't really get why the right is so passionate about walmart. if you say anything bad about the store, you get a swarm of pissed off conservatives defending the place until their dying breath. the place kind of sucks, man, and not just because of the way they treat their workers. the whole shopping experience there is kind of depressing. i doubt many of you really like to shop there either, if you were to be honest. yeah, i know. **** there is cheap.

I defend Walmart's right to not unionize, and you keep saying how bad they treat their workers....but they don't. They offer a product that the lower middle and low class worker can afford. I assure you if they did unionize that it would change the whole dynamics of what they have stood for as prices go.
I don't shop there, but I did work there and it's not as bad as you think it is.
One mans trash is another man's treasure....so it sucks to you, but there are millions who don't think so.

there is a massive paywall between the student and his education or job training that we need to eliminate so that this becomes less and less of a factor.
 
I don't see that. There are plenty of poor people that shop at Costco and Macy's: I see them. Walmart's model has been to low-ball all other retailers: that's a preditory practice and that alone is responsible for the heat walmart has been taking, that's why walmart has been denied operations in some areas. They've been ripping off their people for years. My sister in law is anti union, she worked for a walmart for some time and she hates them now because of how they messed with her hours and pay.

Retail is retail. The restaurant business is the restaurant business. You can package it any way you like: mcdonald's is running at a 15% profit margin. In 2013 they realized revenue of $28 billion! They rip their people off as well as the public and mcdonalds is getting slammed for it.

Sorry, but I just don't buy your premise.

I'm not trying to sell you my premise, but most who buy at Walmart don't buy at Costco or Macy's.

i don't think Walmart is trash. i just don't like that so many are relegated to working and shopping there, and i'd like for their employees to have better working conditions.

This goes far beyond Walmart.
Look to state and federal government for that.
Just upping the min. wage won't resolve the issue, either.

i don't support addressing the issue via minimum wage, except for servers. i'm not tipping to supplement minimum wage; i'm tipping to give the server something extra.
 
Shutting down a store, or any business during an organizing drive is illegal.

Apparently there are ways. Companies including Walmart have closed stores in conjunction with employee situations. Huffpo at least caims this happens:

Walmart has a superior legal staff. If there is a way, they will find it. The unions have superior legal staffs, including in many cases the backing of NLRB and DOJ. If there is a way, they will try to stop it.

Then the solution is to tell your representatives to stop paying subsidies to workers.

You arguing against yourself. On the one hand you state that businesses using low skilled labor are not paying their employees enough to live on, then you arguing that we must enable them to do so by subsidising the wages of those workers.

Thankfully, it's not up to you tell others how to run their business. . Should we add price controls to all businesses that may have employees on assistance? How is that Walmart's fault?

dude, we're a first world country. we aren't going to let people die of poverty or for lack of health care, nor should we. crime would absolutely skyrocket. i'm willing to entertain a lot of ideas, but not this 1950s absolutist bootstrap bull**** when the labor market is completely different now.

Actually, it's absolutely none of your business. If you want the government to stop fleecing you for public assistance, take it up with them.

labor organizes and negotiates for it. if management doesn't want labor organizing, it can prevent that from happening with minimal concessions.

because we all get together quarterly, drink taxpayer funded cognac, and scheme of ways to steal walmart from you and help more people get access to education / job training.

they aren't organizing. some are talking about it. they have not filed a petition for organization so the store can do whatever it wants to do.

Threatening to shut down a business because your employees are thinking about it, is management thuggery, illegal, and most often an empty threat.
