Supporters of the Keystone XL oil pipeline are nearing 60 votes in the Senate ahead of a vote next week on whether to approve the project.
With passage of a pipeline bill in the House all but assured, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) says she is “confident” she can rally the 60 votes needed for a filibuster-proof majority in the upper chamber.

"It is ready for a vote and we have the 60 votes to pass it," Landrieu said on Wednesday.

The Keystone debate is wrapped up in midterm election politics, with both Landrieu and her opponent in the Louisiana Senate runoff — Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) — taking the lead on legislation. The House is set to vote on Cassidy’s Keystone bill on Friday.

Right now, Keystone supporters have a firm 58 votes in the Senate, 13 of which are from Democrats, after Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) on Thursday said he will vote "yes."

Looks like the Keystone Pipeline is gonna get passed the Senate. A bad deal that is gonna hurt a lot of people, worsen the environment, and really not help the US economy at all is most likely gonna be passed.

Hurrah! Congress finally gets something positive done. Great for Canada, good for the US and a wash for the environment.

Btw, for the uninformed, the pipeline itself will be carrying nothing different than all the other existing pipelines. The tar sands are still processed where they are already processed and have been for years.

This is the part that concerns me and why I oppose the keystone XL. Eminent domain should never be used for private companies, especially foreign owned companies. What the **** is wrong with conservatives who claim to be patriotic and respect property rights.Do they have their lips so wrapped around big Oil **** that they are too ****en blind to see that this wrong?

6 years of State dept reviews...get it done.. or not..clear it off the table. I don't think it's a "job creator", and not crazy about more tar sands oil coming thru..

still the alternative is rail cars, and that can't be good.. do it or not.. just do something..or not..

Sure if property rights mean nothing to you then this is a good thing.

Actually, this is exactly the sort of thing eminent domain was written into the Constitution for. Public projects that need private land right of way.

The Senate is about to vote on a bill that would force approval of this disastrous project — endangering the American heartland, worsening our dependence on fossil fuels and driving more climate chaos. Tell your Senators to vote NO on any bill that would approve the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline!

My former Governor and now current Senator's bill is going through. Yes, sir, this is good stuff. Had to wait quite a while for the environmentalist strength to weaken before it could become a reality.

Thanks, I just told my senators to vote yes. It doesn't endanger ****, nor does it greaten dependence on fossil fuels or create more "climate chaos". Without the pipeline the tar sands will still be dug up and processed to crude at the same rate, as they are now. They'll still be refined to gas and diesel and other products as it is now. The only thing that will change is delivery method of the crude to the refineries (it's heavy sour crude so only we have the refineries to do the job). Pipeline delivery is much, much less accident/disaster prone than truck and sea by a large factor.

No it is not. This is not a public project. This is a company in ANOTHER COUNTRY wanting to go through our country to export their goods to countries outside the US. This is the equivalent of a company in Mexico using eminent domain to take property in the US so that they can build a highway to Canada that only they can use.

Unfortunately like all die hard republicans my elected officials have their lips firmly planted on the cocks of big business so they will not VETO this bill.

On that first part, yes, but AFTER those goods are refined in our refineries. As for how it benefits the US, well it depends upon who you believe, the president who says only 2,000 jobs, the oil company who says 20,000 or the US State Department who says 3,900 direct jobs and 42,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Personally, at this point, I hope President Obama vetoes the bill and the Senate is unable to come up with the 67 votes to override it. Many Canadians, if not most, at this point would prefer we keep the production and transportation in country to both the west coast, for transport to Asia and to the east coast, for transport to Europe. If the powers that be don't want to be good business partners with Canada and its rich natural resources, we can find friends and partners elsewhere. The US has benefited greatly from decades of undervalued oilsands product and it's time Canadians benefited from the full market value of their resource. And we'll have long memories too.

This is what I do not understand, we already have 186,000 miles of oil pipeline in the United States and we are squabbling over another 2-3,000 miles. Everybody seem fine, contented even in having 186,000 miles of pipeline, but somehow adding 2-3,000 more brings doom and gloom. This whole thing seems to me about the million of dollars environmentalist donates to the campaigns of political office holders and candidates than any real sense of danger.

Save the snail darter and destroy the human race. After all, without man the environment would be pristine.

This is why we signed NAFTA.

Tsk tsk. We once put up with Pierre Trudeau and remained your friends, so you can tolerate BHO's foibles.

I also have a problem with imminent domain being used to force people off their property over a private business endeavor. Imminent domain should never be used to benefit a private corporation, especially if there won't be at large benefits for citizens.

It is perfectly legitimate to use eminent domain in this manner.

[h=3]Eminent domain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/h]en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domainWikipedia

Eminent domain (United States, the Philippines), compulsory purchase (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland), resumption (Hong Kong), resumption/compulsory acquisition (Australia), or expropriation (South Africa, Canada) is the power to take private property for public use, by a state or a national government.‎ However, it can be legislatively delegated by the state to municipalities, government subdivisions, or even private persons or corporations, when they are authorized to exercise the functions of public character.[1]Meaning - ‎North America - ‎Europe - ‎Australia

I agree with you whole-heatedly. The only group that will suffer is the new-fledgling American oil sand/fracking producers.

American producers are already taking a hit from lower PPB prices on the spot market. Texas fracking sites will have to compete with coastal refineries processing capacity.

Why should I care about America oil producers so long as Obama eats it. I'd rather shoot myself in the foot to win.

This is nothing but political theater, to bail out Mary Landrieu. They're going to pass a bill, Obama will veto it and Democrats are going to run around crying, "well, we tried!".

Problem is I don't think it's going to bail out Landrieu.

This is yet another example of democrats betting that the American people are too stupid to recognize an obvious political ploy when they see one. First the arrogant Landreu call her constituents racist and sexist, now she thinks they are stupid enough to believe her when she says Senate action on the long delayed Keystone Pipeline has nothing to do with politics or her upcoming run-off election.

Obama may veto, Obama may sign but with a signing statement, Obama may sign it.
If he vetoes it, it would be a great veto override test.

(And I still think they should have a vote to override the Obamacare repeal veto.)
