    Good afternoon Rocket,

I have to say - nonsense. Haley Barbour is a plain spoken, colourfully eloquent man who uses southern colloquialisms on a regular basis. It's part of southern charm. People in the south aren't afraid to use language as it was defined and meant to be used. I love people who refuse to be cowed by the nattering elites who are offended by every breath someone opposed to their view of the world takes.

A nice way of avoiding the fact that you'll never understand the actual history, instead you just write it off and dismiss it. Of course you're comfortable with that.

Which is the source of the banned Disney flick. The Song of the South is where most of my generation knows the term tar baby from (I'm 63).

He's a skilled politician who knew (or should have known) the connotations to his word choices. I can buy that he didn't choose his words carefully, but he didn't apologize for that. He was sorry that people took offense which is a different thing altogether.

His intention was to say that there were issues nobody wanted to touch. He also knew that his word choice was going to get his name in the news again, or he completely **** the bed and isn't as skilled of a politician as I gave him credit for.

The Tar-Baby is a fictional character in the second of the Uncle Remus stories published in 1881; it is a doll made of tar and turpentine used to entrap Br'er Rabbit. The more that Br'er Rabbit fights the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he becomes.

In modern usage, "tar baby" refers to any "sticky situation" that is only aggravated by additional contact.

He knew what he was saying, and where it was coming from. Or he's an ignoramus. You can't have it both ways.

I'm not saying that he said anything racist. I'm saying that he either knew there was racial baggage because of the Uncle Remus connection, or he's a Rangel-class dummy who should think before he opens his mouth.

To be honest, the only people offended by that term are not very bright. Kind of like the ones who think "niggardly" is offensive. We e need to stop catering to the lowest common denominator.

I have to disagree with you here. Haley Barbour is a plain spoken man who doesn't give a rat's ass about the elites on the left who spend their entire day desperately searching for someone on the right to offend them. It's a bloody cottage industry, with professional offendees floating around waiting to explode in fake outrage. One has to wonder how your great country survived 200+ years without imploding from the heartbreak of offense.

As I said earlier, in post #19:

The Oxford American Dictionary defines tar baby as "a difficult problem, that is only aggravated by attempts to solve it."

That is perfectly in step with what Haley Barbour said, period.

The left doesn't get to co-opt the English language and eliminate word usage based on their tender hearts.

It's a cottage industry on both sides. The same people (in most, but not all cases) who were losing their **** over Charley Rangel saying "cracker" are the ones defending this. But it's all the same, it's fake partisan outrage.

Haley Barbour didn't get where he is without being a good politician. You don't get to be the chairman of the RNC by being a plain spoken man who doesn't give a rats ass. He's good at making people think he's a plain spoken man who doesn't give a rats ass.

He knew the racial connotations, and he said it knowing "the scary evil left" would get offended and he'd look like a hero to people who don't know better. Or he's too dumb to notice, but I don't think that a 2 term governor of Mississippi and former RNC chair is that dumb.
