I hate nazi Germany but I'll give credit where credit is due.

They had kick-ass technology and pioneered tons of things including the world's first assault rifle, rocket, and jet-powered aircraft.

There were millions of party members and only a portion were responsible for the atrocities. I have no problems with them working for us. Von Braum is the brains behind the American success in the space race against the communists who killed 50-60,000,000 people.

the MI carbine was originally designed to be select fire and that pre-dates the STG 44, however, the select fire option was omitted initially to speed up production of the M1 Carbine and only deployed after the German rifle was on the battlefield

This is just one aspect of research done under Hitler's regime that has subsequently been exploited by Western democracies. Medical experiments done by S.S doctors yielded huge leaps in research. For example, high altitude experiments, sea water experiments, freezing experiments, sulfanilamide experiments, Tuberculosis experiments, as well as experiments in artificial insemination and sterilisation (and much more)[1], all contributed to modern medicine -- the benefits of which you all enjoy now.

technically yes-a 30 caliber 110 grain bullet going about 1950 fps. Heavier bullet than the SS109 (62) grains but only 2/3 the speed

much more energy than say a 9mm which is 115 grain bullet at 1100 FPS or a 45 ACP (230 grain bullet at about 850 FPS)

WWII ended 69 years ago. About 2 years after I was born.

The passage of time doesn't remove the pain from those who suffered and continue to suffer because of the war.

But it does make it somewhat less relevant to our lives today.

Less powerful than the round of a battle rifle but more range than a pistol (which makes me wonder, what if you had a gun that shot a pistol round at such speeds that it had more range than the average pistol. Does that pistol round somehow become an intermediate cartridge? I'll admit, I'm not too educated on that topic in particular).

No, I'm not being sarcastic. Do I "like" Nazi Germany? Nazi Germany doesn't exist any more and I never lived in it, so I don't know whether I would "like" it. I suspect I probably would have. Do I think the political policies of Germany under Hitler were right? Yes. Do I think the essential ideology behind those policies was correct? Yes.

That War as been over for 70+ years now. Time to stop playing the boogie man / Nazi man game and leave things alone.

True, the German scientific research investment prior and during WW II are what make the last 1/2 of the 20th century what it is, as those developments and progress were spread across the planet to be used for both good and evil. Medicine and rocketry being only two examples of much much more.

I just think "assault rifle" and think, while the M1 was a great carbine and in paratrooper model a real assault weapon with the folding stock. The German models were weak with only the 9mm round.
I would call the AK the real first all around assault weapon. 7.62x39 (.30cal) short to intermediate range effectiveness, concealable with a folder.
The STG was also never built in massive quantity either.
Good debate, but I never liked the term "assault rifle" either. Especially since the media has hijacked the word.
