He admitted it. He was so far behind in the polls that he said he had to do something to give himself a chance, and he saw her as the chance he needed. Of course, it didn't help one bit.
I remember the press conference when Mondale introduced Geraldine Ferraro. You could tell by the tone of his voice, he was certain that he had just won the election based on the novelty of picking the first female VP candidate.
