Reid on the Ropes | National Review Online

It looks as if Harry Reid is at high risk of losing any Senate leadership role after Tuesday’s election.

Reid said Saturday that it’s all up to Iowa to determine whether he keeps his job. He told Democratic donors that if Republican Joni Ernst wins her victory, it “would mean . . . that Mitch McConnell would be leader of the United States Senate.” Given that Sunday’s Des Moines Register poll shows Ernst with a seven-point lead over Democrat Bruce Braley, Reid can be forgiven some nervousness.
But Reid may also not even remain minority leader after Tuesday, though Democrats around him exude inside-the-Beltway loyalty to him in public. Chuck Schumer, the No. 3 ranking Democrat and a man known for his ambition, told Meet the Press last month that Reid had a lock on the majority leader’s job. But he didn’t extend his optimism to cover what would happen if Democrats suffer a Senate bloodbath on Tuesday and must suddenly anticipate a tough path to regaining Senate control even in 2016, when the electoral map will favor Senate Democrats once again.

Reid himself, normally a picture of blustery self-confidence, has toned down his insistence that he will stay regardless of the electoral outcome.

That crucial element of Reid’s leadership style — designed to prevent Republicans from forcing Democrats to vote on “gotcha” amendments — has had the unintended consequence of giving Democratic senators running in red states few chances to show any independence from President Obama.
I've been talking about this sum'bitch for a while now. I think he's over-played his game and is a weak-link in the Democratic Party. For all his years and power, people are getting fed up with his bull****, especially some Democrats. He's been running interference for Obama for six years, and it's probably the reason why Obama got reelected. But his playbook is getting old, and tiresome. He's a ****ing megalomaniac who wants to rule the Senate till 2022!

It is something that needs to happen. I would argue that Reid has been more partisan and more intentionally difficult to deal with than Obama has. Since Republicans took the 112th Congressional House we have seen more problems caused by their actions than otherwise with Reid exceeding what I thought he would do along party lines.

My worry is McConnell may be even worse...

I think even if the Dems retain control of the Senate (which I don't think they will), Reid wouldn't be elected as Majority Leader again. He's just bad for his party.

I'm not so certain, because they are that stupid. But he'll continue to tank Dems in local elections in the future because he's not a legislator. He's just a corrupt, goon. I'd rather have four more years of Obama than another two years of Reid, that man is Satan incarnate.

Schumer is drooling at the prospect, but I sure can't see any improvement there! Now that I think about it though, I hope he gets it!

How do people like Reid and McConnell get to be the leaders of their party... sigh. I can not stand either one of them.

You have to be part weasel.

Well when you only have to fight for 30% of the voting public in your area, its easy.

And we'll soon know who the new weasel in chief is going to be. Stay tuned, this could get interesting.

It could be more of Reid, but almost anyone else would be better.

That explains them getting elected, not necessarily how they get Senate leader positions.

It starts with being a career politician. Related closely is a somnambulant voting public that sincerely doesn't know its hole from an ass in the ground. Sure, we discuss it here. At least most people on DP know who Reid and McConnell are and what they do or don't do, but most of the voting public in America doesn't have a feckin clue. People just vote for names they heard of and it has been proven time and time again, people vote party line because it is easier than knowing why they are voting for anyone.

So here were are there is no way Reid or McConnell should hold office, but Americans keep voting them back in. Why? The two party system is rigged that way - AND GUESS WHAT? The two party system isn't going to change it.

People continue to beg for a term limit law in Congress. That's laughable. It really is. Why? Because people continue to vote overwhelmingly for the incumbent! Reid and McConnell wouldn't be there if people would vote them out. The People already have the power to impose term limits by simply not voting for anyone who has served more than one or two terms. But the People can't be bother, they want Congress to impose the limits on themselves and as a result we get Reid and McConnell and Schumer, Pelosi and Boxer, Bachman, McCain, Franks, Jackson and a whole host of career politicians who suck the freedom out of the republic.

Thank you. (phew). I feel better now.

A good rant from time to time can do wonders.

Total commitment to the agenda. Independent thinkers and voters need not apply.

Funny. I say that about your guys.

Reid is a scum bag but his tentacles run deep and like any cancer he will be extremely difficult to get rid of

My guys? Which are those? I'm not a partisan. Somebody asked how people like Reid and McConnell get re-elected and I provided an opinion. So apparently we agree?

I don't think McConnel is slimier than Reid, however, I don't think much will change with Reid out the majority spot.

Reid needs to be gone from Congress completely, he not only hurts Congress as a whole he hurts the Dems. His usefulness to their cause is long over. I don't see much liberalism moving forward due to his leadership, which is fine by me too. But just saying.

I agree with you there, Reid is one of the slimiest politicians out there. Definitely in the Top 3 in my book of slimiest.

I think if the Democrats retain the senate, Reid will go nowhere. He will continue on being majority leader. In fact even if the Democrats lose the senate, I would give odds on Reid being elected minority leader. Remember the Democrats elected their once Speaker of the House Pelosi and the minority leader once they lost control of the house.

Reid is a party over country guy. Everything he has done was just to ensure the Democrats maintain their majority in the senate, little thought given to the country as a whole.

I get people trying to push their agendas, but just not bringing stuff to the floor for a vote is way over the top. He ought
