It depends on your motive. In you OP you mentioned he wanted to go to Syria but did you mention why? Your apologism seems consistent with the current regime in America preferring this be a mentally unstable lone wolf then someone acting on behalf of radical Islam....which the regime said was defeated when it asked for re election.

Did he do it because of "radical Islam"? Most likely. Was he a member of any terrorist group? No.
 
It is apologism if you are excusing his action for mental illness and ignoring his politics. Like the left did to the Colorado theaters shooter.

No im not.
At no where did I say his actions should be overlooked by his mental illness. He did have a mental illness, and he was probably influenced by radicalism jihadism.
 
That is why I asked what your motive was, for I'm not accusing you but I will accuse those who want to do just that. It sounds to me like a DNC talking point so people won't blame radical Islam.
