A doctor in New York City who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea tested positive for the Ebola virus Thursday, becoming the city’s first diagnosed case.

The doctor, Craig Spencer, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday and placed in isolation while health care workers spread out across the city to trace anyone he might have come into contact with in recent days. A further test will be conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control to confirm the initial test.

Told you so. If a physician of his training can not only contract but travel with ebola we NEED to close those nations to travel. This is BASIC stuff folks, no epidemiology or infectious disease training needed. The African nations that have restricted travel (even while being located between outbreak nations) have prevented this disease from spreading into their countries.

But our President says everything is fine, and if ever there was a man whose word the whole country could trust, it's Barack Obama. Plus, he's really smart--he went to Harvard Law School, and everything, and he won a Nobel Prize. I'm sure he knows all about these medical things.

Dont forget the political operative "Ebola Czar"! No doubt he will be furious when he finds out about this on the news.

I've treated hundreds (maybe thousands) of ID patients, from TB to MRSA, to tropical diseases. Part of that treatment is preventing its spread to anyone, medical staff, nursing staff, or other patients.

You can't have an iso ward without isolation, and the POINT is another "unscheduled" visitor has just spread the disease. Am outbreak of a highly contagious viral hemorrhagic disease with up to a 90% mortality is not the place to lax. And you are lax.

That's ok we didn't want to chat about radical Islam this week anyway, or executive privilege. Ever imagine CNN would totally ignore a president excreting executive privilege ?

If U.S.-trained medical staff can't return, then why would they go to Africa to help stop this thing from spreading? Do you really think that by leaving the Africans to their own devices we'll be able to avoid a problem?

Those are other reasons to remind us why Obama is a horrible President. Cant remind people of that just before an election, you know. Especially since ebola is a great distraction. Though it still has plenty of fail on its own and with a non-liberal potus this alone would be unacceptable.

Do you think I'm suggesting they stay there permanently? They should be quarantined like everyone else, and then get to come back. I've provided medical care in 3rd world countries-its a known and understood complication of infectious disease medicine.

The alternative is spread of a highly contagious and highly lethal disease, potentially to millions. They understand that-thats why they went there in the first place.

You said these countries should be closed to travel. I understood that to mean no travel.

Except medical staff and military. They however STILL need an observation period THERE, and would still REQUIRE quarantine if they showed any symptoms.

Dealing with this isn't enormously complex, lets stop relying on the self-reporting and fundamentally flawed "temp scans" and start getting serious about this disease-the consequences are too serious too ignore.

This is one place where EVERYONE should be conservative, but there are lefties who's own ideology will prevent that.

OK. That's reasonable.

Of course, had we closed that travel, we would have left the Dr to die in West Africa. That is, unless, of course, you would prefer we continue to send one Gulfstream V per sick individual.

What is becoming abundantly clear here is that health care workers that treat late stage ebola are most susceptible. The one case in Dallas that involved an infected person out and about in the community when he was contagious resulted in NO transmissions of the virus, even to his family members and girl friend. Experts have said all along that this is an extremely hard disease to convey. That appears to be true.

This is really turning into much to do about nothing. The idea of cutting off travel is actually starting to appear to be not a particularly good idea.

Relax. You are still far more likely to die in a mall shooting or car jacking.

How will restricting travel prevent doctors from contracting Ebola while while they treat patients in Africa? That seems to be the problem now.

Who could have seen the spin coming? The doctor took a risk and decided to go, thats not a green light to come back with ebola. We aren't talking about probabilities here were are talking about something that should not have happened, but DID for Obama's **** politics.

It wont, it will prevent them from spreading the disease, here or to other nations. The morality rate for healthcare workers is currently something like 20%-but putting them on airplanes and allowing them to fly when they can clearly bypass screens is a BAD idea.

We really haven't seen any spreading except with healthcare workers dealing with late stage ebola. Perhaps a quarantine for those people would make sense. But the risk otherwise appears very small.
The CDC appear to believe that HC workers will seek treatment before they become contagious and there is nothing happening that contradicts that is there?

We have also seen spread from migrants/immigrants here-again something that would be addressed with a travel ban. This is a serious disease-it needs to be respected.

The CDC has been thoroughly discredited in this incident, largely because with Obama its about politics. You'd be better served getting data from WHO.

Nothing to worry about. Just because two healthcare workers got it the last time they treated an Ebola patient doesn't mean anything.

As long as you don't accidently touch your skin removing your hazmat suits, you're fine.

And remember the CDC says that until the very minute, maybe the very second, that someone shows signs of the Ebola infection---they ARE NOT contagious!

So its safe to have have sex with infected Ebola suspects, give them backrubs, drink after them, breathe their air---just until they start running a fever and feeling bad.

They stay away or face a 50% chance of dying.
