101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West Afric

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

You are really scared of those guys in drag. Obviously you are not a shellback...

I here you were always first to volunteer as dressing up as the Highness Amphitrite every time your ship crossed the equator.

If it was just a made up rumor of you're former shipmates, never mind then.

I crossed the line twice during the 1970's but not on a Navy ship but on a sloop. No real celebration, more concerned with how long were we going to be stuck in the doldrums.

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

And if they where performing a mission in a hospital, they would use full protective suits wouldn't they? See how easy that is, all you have to do is not have a kneejerk outraged reaction and think.

They're going into a disease hot zone. PPE might be required. Yes, I do see how easy that is.

And why on earth would you not expect a knee-jerk outrage without thinking? Why doesn't the shameless GOP politicizing of health and death over Ebola, beheadings, Putin, Benghazi and the rest bother people? Or Boehner refusing an Ebola hearing for 6 weeks until last week ?

PPE would be required if they were handling Ebola patients.

I don't think there are many Ebola patients hanging around construction sites.

Nothing like me, you're right! :lamo

Of course I am. Very like you. Nothing has no content, and nature abhors it.

"Disease Hot Zone"

Unless you're talking about the more popular brothels during port stops I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Sounds to me like your picture of the situation is somewhere between a Hollywood film and a far right wing paranoia horror scenario.

Are these soldiers coming into direct contact with sick people?

Are they treating and coming into contact with their fluids?

Do you believe Ebola is floating as a huge toxic cloud over this region?

If the answer is no to any of these questions than hazmat suits are not required.

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

Are you familiar with that old saying, "it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"?

So, you are advocating for government waste, eh? You want them to spend money on something they probably don't need.... if any department of government is good at spending money on things they don't need its the DoD...

You have so little faith in the competence of our military that you think our commanders would take troops into harm's way ill-prepared? Don't you think they were briefed by experts and have outfitted the troops in accordance with the needs and risks of the mission?

Me thinks you just like getting it up (your blood pressure) by surfing the web in search of good political smut. Go back and try again and we will shoot something else down that you find on a political porn site.

And in fact, in some situations it may be required. In those situations, they should have it. And in fact, they have been trained in it for the mission. Soldiers briefed, trained for tough Ebola mission

Following the briefing, there was extensive training on how to wear the protective gear – protective masks, boots, gloves (two pairs minimum and three pairs recommended) and Tyvex suits.
Every soldier was required to don the gear and go through the decontamination process, aided by West Virginia Army National Guard full-time personnel of the 35th CST (Civil Support Team) and CERFP (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, High-Explosive Emergency Response Force Package) personnel.

Also note from the same article:

"Our mission," said DeSantis, "in support of the USAID-led effort, is to, one, build Ebola treatment units, which are being built to identify Ebola patients, as well as care for them. Two, our mission is to train health care workers who will be the actual ones to treat Ebola patients, to staff those treatment units. That's our two missions."
For this mission, called Operation Unified Assistance (OUA), the 101st contingent is primarily headquarters personnel to coordinate all of those efforts and medical personnel to train medical workers.

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

They're not properly equipped to operate in a disease hot zone.

If they are building hospitals when exactly would they be wearing these suits?

.... that is most likely the most dangerous thing our soldiers will do in West Africa. That is one place that getting the disease is possible...

This is an Army unit, not a Navy unit. They don't make ports of call.

Are you 100% certain that these troops will never be exposed to ebola during their mission?

I'll ask you the same question: you're 100% certain that these troops will never be exposed to ebola during their mission?

Are you 100% certain they aren't going to go in the ocean during their trip? Why aren't we issuing them full chain-mail shark suits?!?

No one is 100% sure of anything. When would builders of hospitals actually wear these suits? Certainly not while doing the actual building. Then they would be in camp, I'm guessing not to bed. I guess its possible they could come upon someone with the disease but they probably wouldn't be wearing them in that case anyway. The suits should be issued to those that will come in contact with infected individuals. Maybe a couple of suits for this kind of unit in case they need to work with or help an infected individual. (Not sure this is likely but anything is possible)

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

That's not the 101st ABD. Two different units.

From the article I supplied:

A briefing and training session at Fort Campbell on Thursday was both a confidence builder and a reality check for 101st Airborne soldiers soon bound for Liberia

Did you catch that?

Yes, I'm 100%+ certain that those troops will not be attacked by sharks.

Wanna try again?

Yes, I'm 100%+ certain that those troops will not be attacked by sharks.

I am 100% certain they won't be providing direct healthcare services to Ebola patients. So, no need for specialty equipment to guard against a very long shot risk.

Your ignorance precludes your understanding. They don't need them since their duties should not bring them into contact with infected peoples' body fluids. The only two things 100% certain are that we'll all die of something, and your comment will be inanely partisan..

Ahh, now we're getting somewhere. Since we can't be sure that those will never be required to cone in contact with ebola victims, it would be a hood idea to issue PPE in case they are. Yes?

What if the disease goes airborne? Then what? Life's a bitch like that?

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

So, who's idea was it really that we should send them in unprepared?

New PC MOP gear.

Re: 101st Airborne Won’t Get Full Protective Hazmat Suits for Ebola Mission in West A

What if the disease goes airborne?

If it goes airborne than we're just ****ed because there's virtually no way you can contain an airborne virus.

But since a virus transmission has never been observed as having changed... NEVER... then this wild speculative nonsense is pointless.
