In September, Rep. Trey Radel voted for Republican legislation that would allow states to make food stamp recipients pee in cups to prove they're not on drugs. In October, police busted the Florida Republican on a charge of cocaine possession.

“It’s really interesting it came on the heels of Republicans voting on everyone who had access to food stamps get drug tested," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told BuzzFeed Tuesday. "It’s like, what?”

The House over the summer approved an amendment by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) that would let states drug test people on food stamps. The amendment passed by voice vote, meaning members' individual yeas and nays were not recorded. Radel later voted in favor of a broader food stamps bill that included Hudson's measure.

In support of his drug testing legislation, Hudson cited the many state legislatures around the country that had considered similar requirements for other means-tested programs in recent years.

"This is a clear and obvious problem in our communities as nearly 30 states have introduced legislation to drug test for welfare programs," Hudson said. "We have a moral obligation to equip the states with the tools they need to discourage the use of illegal drugs."

Most of the state legislation was authored by Republicans. Oftentimes, state Democrats responded by suggesting lawmakers should be subject to tests as well. If the government's going to make sure recipients of taxpayer-funded benefits are clean, the argument went, then why not also make sure the recipients of taxpayer salaries are clean, too?

Is he on food stamps?

hopefully once he gets convicted

Id love to see drug testing across the board for all these POS snakes. Any guesses on the amount of positive results?

Is he on food stamps?

Does it make a difference when taxpayers like us pay for his salary just like we pay for people to get food stamps?

Probably not, but does that mean you want him making laws?

Not really. I'm fine with drug testing welfare recipients because I don't want to be paying for their dope. I'm also fine with drug testing politicians for the same reason, but I doubt that's a law we'll ever see proposed.

That's ok a CA State Senator who constantly promoted gun control was arrested for gun running including WMDs to street gangs....but I don't think your leftist media covered that one.

The important thing is why such a law will not be proposed. Most likely they would argue about liberty and privacy if it were actually proposed. And its for those same reasons that a law like that will not be proposed. Yet when it comes to testing welfare people things like liberty and privacy are completed ignored.

But you stated that what you are opposed too is tax dollars going to people who buy drugs. Then by that logic if the person did not buy anything then you shouldnt have a problem. So even if a person tests positive then the State should have to prove that the welfare recipient spent tax payers money on the drugs that made him test positive. A positive test doesnt at all mean that money was spent. Also in each State that has proposed or has had a law requiring drug testing it is always a part of a anti drug abuse program. The stated purpose isnt to save tax payers money (in fact it cost Florida more money) the law instead addresses drug abuse from a medical perspective. ANd in some States drug testing targets parents, citing the safety of the children.

The entire idea of drug testing welfare recipients is a slippery slope. If you test one group there isnt any legal reason then why other groups should not be assessed in the same manner.
All grant monies then should require drug testing. Some grants go to improving a entire city or even counties. This means that tax payers monies is going to all of those people. If one then the other. It would be easy to manipulate a legal standing like drug testing requirements.

It is yet another wedge shoved in between the people and their liberty.

Seat belts and helmets should be required by law. We should piss test welfare people. Piss test all parents. Lets piss test for tax returns. Drivers license are a privilege. Any license is a privilege. It is for safety. Lets make everyone safe. The government should make everyone safe. Make everyone register their firearms. Lets piss test firearm owners in the registration process. It would be unsafe for anyone on drugs to own a firearm. Ban certain firearms. Lets ban all firearms it is unsafe for the public to own firearms.

Yep another wedge.

Heh. Not to beat a drum, but all the more reason to support GBI instead of welfare programs. Why are we spending so much money on private drug-testing companies?

Wow. I didn't hear about that, do you have a link I can look at.

Re: Trey Radel, Busted On Cocaine Charge, Voted For Drug Testing Food Stamp Recipient

Is he on food stamps?

No, the government pays him $174,000 per annum plus expenses, and unlike food stamps, he really doesn't have to do anything.

Of course, as a Republican, he should be against government waste, especially programs that do not work. Drug testing for welfare does not work.

Drug Testing Welfare Recipients Is a Waste of Taxpayer Money

Come to think of it, we pay our congressmen, in aggregate, just under $100million per year in salaries alone. Talk about government programs that do not work.;)

Yes. In fact, he is collecting $174,000 per year in taxpayer funds.

Because various politicians like to enrich their friends who own drug testing companies. Or in some cases, their own spouse.

I actually initiated a thread here and Cnn.com ignored this for two solid weeks as it happened. You never saw this link from their home page. Not once...even msnbc did that for a day.

It's not a deflection a comparison. I realize you hateful leftist zealots can't stand comparisons. Your beloved Democratic Party lost control of the CA state senate because of three democrats getting arrested and forced out? Where is that lame stream media news? Where is you selective outrage?

Uh... no they didn't...

California State Senate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The California State Senate has 25 Democrats... and 12 Republicans...

Lang lang lang.... someone's train of thought jumped the track in a typical CON diversion game. (I heard Yee was going to sell shoulder fired weapons to overseas terrorists, a supposed 2 million dollar deal)

CBS and the CON decried Commie News Network reported it... I guess ya missed that in a haze of CONfusion, but do spin on.... :peace

LOL

Perhaps it would be a good idea to gain some knowledge on the subject, rather than apply the typical Progressive response to an issue based only on obsession.

California Senate votes to suspend accused arms trafficker, convicted felon…with pay « Hot Air

They haven’t just been the subject of criminal probes. Yee is facing charges and has yet to be convicted. Ronald Calderon, D-Montebello, also faces more than 20 charges after an FBI raid on his office, and Roderick Wright, D-Inglewood, has been convicted of several felonies. Wright has been on a leave of absence while preparing for his sentencing in early May for voter fraud, among other things.

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, is shocked that a sizable percentage of his caucus has faced felony charges this year:

“One is an anomaly, two a coincidence, but three?” Steinberg said on the Senate floor before the vote.

What is shocking is they allowed these men to take leaves of absence, which meant they kept getting paid, and voters couldn't replace them. And no, the MSM has barely scratched the surface on the widespread corruption of Liberal/Progressives in Sacramento.

WHy would I be outraged? They were forced out and the system worked. That doesn't sound like something to be outraged about.

I'm just playing by your rightist rules. Mentioning someone else is a deflection. Do you not like that rule, or is it only bad when a "hateful leftist zealot" does it?
