Yes indeed. My entire posting history here has been to make that argument.

Interesting how things change in just a few months. Not that long ago some Americans were sounding war drums because Putin was even backing the regime, Obama gotr cranky when he couldn't even have a 'teensy" attack over the international community's 'red line."

Now, the friend of America's enemy, one who is an enemy a third of a world away, is now the enemy of my enemy and their intervention is welcome.

You may recall way back then that I criticized Obama for making Putin an enemy, all that posturing over gay rights etc., rhetoric never designed for use in diplomatic circles. I suggested then, with this 'red line' the news of the day, that Obama should sit down with Putin and see what 'they' could do.

After watching him 'lecture' world leaders at the UN, I believe the peace prize and his re-election have convinced him that "leader of the free world" is an official title, that may be why he's facing this challenge far greater than the Taliban virtually alone. All he's got are his two pet rocks, David Cameron and Stephen Harper with little more than moral support and in Harper's case could cost him his job.

Obama's attitude is typical American arrogance that 'do what we say, not what we do'. Putin has his countries own interests to look out after, including a piece of the energy pie we're trying to control. Obama could easily orchestrate a deal where Russia helps eliminate ISIS and other terrorists to keep a controlling interest in supplying Europe with petroleum products. Cutting them off with pipelines from the south is why they entered Crimea for the extra production.

IMO, the region's leaders and political framework are a product of the countries' structural and institutional framework. Factors ranging from sectarian balance/rivalries to the presence/absence of civil society have contributed to authoritarian leaders being required in most of those countries if there is to be stability.

How is the bombings in Iraq & Syria hypocritical?

Russia is engaging in a proxy war in Ukraine to rebuild the USSR.
We're bombing Iraq and Syria to annihilate terrorists who are killing, raping and destroying.

    Apples and Oranges, my friend.
