BUT, I will say that I enjoyed Vice's documentary of the nation.

Juche doesn't obviate socialism. Both the USSR and China were additionally ruled by the people who won the war, and if you think that the Soviet Union didn't practice their own brand of Songun, you haven't read up on how they allocated resources throughout their history. North Korea, sad little sick, twisted, brutal hole of a nightmare that it is, fully deserves the epithet of Socialism.

Another American citizen sentenced to an incredibly harsh sentence in the DPRK. I certainly hope we can bring them all home at some point through negotiations.
Do NOT go to North Korea.

China tried. The USSR basically abandoned all of its socialist ideals when Stalin took over. Turns out the starting point of "single party, military dictatorship, totalitarian ruling style" is pretty harsh soil for socialism to flourish in. It really has to be in an open, democratic society in order to function. Hence why the more democratic industrialized nations are becoming more and more socialist and its flourishing fine and improving their lives. A much better place for socialism than China or the USSR is here. And it's working, too.

When he arrived, he tore up his passport, threw a fit and demanded asylum. That's tourism? No, it's not tourism; it's going off ones meds and catching a flight to North Korea.

The idea that he was a tourist is propaganda. What source called him a tourist?

What if we don't want them back. This particular fellow was looking to defect as it was.

If I had a visa to visit North Korea I would tear it up as well. But I would do it before going there.
