As would be any graven images, but the church long ago realized the marketing power of breaking one of the 10 Commandments.

I find it disgusting that this is a misdemeanor. It ought to be punished by imprisonment.
As much as I'm appalled by what this kid did I have a hard time considering it to be anything more than public indecency. From a very brief read it doesn't appear to have been an act of vandalism so I have a hard time getting to "desecration".

Who's that? Seriously, while in bad taste, it's nothing more than vandalism if he damaged it. Otherwise maybe lewd conduct. Treat accordingly.

Would you say the same if he had been naked (and thus committing indecent exposure)?

He was drunk, I don't think he could get that hard.

Is that what the courts officially charged him with?

Blasphemy isn't a crime, as far as I'm aware.
Public indecency, or peeing in public (which was mentioned in the article) are crimes I have no problem with... but - the article says the guy was charged with, now get this, "Desecration of a Venerable Object" - seriously.
Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, don't blame someone else, or expect others to make a change, you should stop complaining and make a different choice. Remember, the circumstances of your birth don't determine the outcome of your life.
