$23 Billion Lawsuit Settlement for One Smoking Death

Since everyone knows that smoking kills you, why is the sale of cigarettes legal?

I don't know, but you want to sue an industry for doing some that legal, and everyone knows that smoking is dangerous.

It will be closed when the last cigarette is sold in the USA, and that day is coming.

Wait and see.
When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east and mountans blow like leaves in the wind.

And besides, no person in the world is worth $28Bil anyway. Even if the companey is guilty of something, the penalty sould be medical bills plus earning potential through his natural lifespan. Nothing more.

We need to ban pot too, because people will develop lung cancer from smoking.

Intentionally deceiving people about the deadly product you're selling them with the intent of getting more people to get addicted before any resistance to your product starts up. Deliberately marketing that deadly product to children.

Is there not a big red label that says "Don't Smoke it's harmful to your heath"

Yeah but everyone is now smoking pot, plus cigarettes, I guess your wish will have to wait.

One business channel said she will probably end up with a mere 180-190 million!!

Liquor kills too, they tried killing booze, but that didn't work. Now states are approving POT for legal sale. So people are drinking booze, smoking pot and having a cigarette or a cigar.

Yes, and? The crime was still committed.

what crime? him ignoring the label on the side of the box is not a crime of the company it is his continued stupidity to smoke the things.

When are cheese companies going to be convicted? How many people does cholestoral kill every year?

That maybe true, but the cigarettes will be changed for joints which stupid people think are harmless.

What is the difference if somebody is dying from cáncer from smoking cigarettes or joints?

The award was 23 billion and it was a penalty for bad behavior by the cigarette company.

In the long run, whether you or anyone else agree with this award won't change it, it'll be up to the courts.

None that I know of, they all end up in the ground, but I haven't heard of a lot of people dying from smoking weed.

I need to do a little research on that.

Well, I took a quick look and it looks like marijuana is not near as bad for the body as tobacco smoke. You'd have to smoke a train-load to do yourself any harm, close to impossible.

Light up a joint and throw away your cigarettes.

QUESTION: Why not sue Hollywood for deliberately forcing nonsmoking actors to smoke on screen and making money off films showing young people the performers smoking? I don't know the name of the hit series about the tobacco people where everyone smokes. At My Walgreen the thousands of cigarette packs are located directly behind the cashier and I see Marlboro must have 25 different type of their cigarette to choose from- red box, blue box, black box, gold box, green box. short ones, long ones, regular ones-what a joke.

Right, but on this thread we're talking about cigarette smoking.

We're not talking about any and everything that can harm you, if you want to start a thread based on that, get after it.

Surely, you know exactly what my point was.

You suggestted that since cigarettes are known killers then why are they not illegal?

And my point was that there are an incredible number of things that are potential killers - why should they be legal while cigarettes are illegal?

So instead of leaving it up to the individual to run their own lives (and take responsibility for their bad decisions)...you want to make some things illegal so that no one can use them.

Pass...I will stick with personal freedom and take responsibility for my actions.

You can always move to Singapore...you cannot even chew gum there without a doctor's note. Maybe they will ban cigarettes as well someday.

So it is a matter of degrees for you then.

Obviously if you fill your lungs with a foreign substance for any length of time, there wil be consequences.

How many cigarettes did this man have to smoke to die at the age of 36? This means he got the cáncer years before.

Maybe he had a genetic predisposition to the cáncer.

In any case the cigarette company did not put them in his hands nor did they know about his genetic predisposition to the cáncer.

That would have my support.

The cigarette company sold the cigarettes and made a profit on them, the court decided what it decided.

Deal with it and move on.
