My question to you all, is why can't this spox just say, "He's not going because it wouldn't do any good?" Doesn't she realize just how fake she looks when she just can't come out and say what everyone knows is true? Is it because they are worried that it might show he doesn't care? All these critics of Obama who think he should go to the border... just what do you expect him to do? Pick the kids up in Air Force One and drop them back into Mexico?

Thoughts?

I hadn't heard that demanding he go to the border was even a thing. I agree there's no legit purpose to go, however for morale, for politics, for assuaging the bleeding heart liberals (I'm a critically analytic liberal with no heart),.... yeah there's a point to it from some social and political reasons. Is it worth it? I don't think so, but I can see reasons why some think it is.

He doesn't care anymore than the rest of us. But some of us do go on about it without a way out.

It matters tremendously to people in southern border states. And, it matters to many others as well.

I can understand why a President wouldn't go to any disaster area, which this is turning into.

My job is disaster recovery. When any President or Administration official shows up, everything stops. It's a serious pain in the rear for the people trying to deal with whatever is happening to have to deal with that kind of dog and pony show plus all the freaking security.

If the President wants to go down there, and politicians in each party feel he should, then let him fly over and then land somewhere far away to meet with the Governors of the states affected. There's no reason the President should take any tours of any facilities where these people are - we damned sure don't need him catching something and getting sick.

What the President is supposed to do is manage and lead. He can do that from anywhere. If he would... so far, from what everyone in the border states are saying, from both parties, is that we're way behind the power curve on this.

The first thing Obama should be doing, is getting Congress to change the law that gives people from Central American countries, other than Mexico, the right to petition for refugee status. Congress passed that law in 2008 as a humanitarian action to stem sex trafficking of kids and other trafficking of people, which is laudable, but is having serious unintended consequences. That law is the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008. He has already started this, but he's not pushing Congress as hard as he should because he's getting friction from his own party.

Second, he needs to rescind his statements that kids that get here can stay here - the DREAM Act rhetoric has lead a lot of people in other countries to think if they can just get their kids here, they can stay, which isn't true, but they think it is. In the same vein, he needs to rescind his EO regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) which he signed in 2012, as part of his implementation of the DREAM Act, which by the way, isn't even a law.

Thirdly, he needs to start enforcing the laws that are already on the books, like the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), which already gives him the authority to prosecute companies that employ illegals and requires all employers to do what is now available through e-Verify. If we stop the jobs, there's no reason for them to stay.

Fourth, he needs to take executive action to streamline the Immigration Court System, which is actually not part of the Judicial Branch and is completely under his control as part of the US Justice Department. The current laws, except for the one I listed in the "first thing" paragraph, give him the authority to do so, so except for the kids, he can speed this up.

Fifth, he needs to get Congress to give him the money to do it, and accept Congressional oversight of the operation. He's already asked for $3.7 billion, but I don't think that's enough. According to USA Today, of that amount, "$1.8 billion, would go to the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to provide appropriate care for the children while in U.S. custody. $1.1 billion would go to the U.S. Homeland Security Department to pay for transporting the children, expanding investigations of immigrant smugglers and pay for the detention and removal of undocumented adults traveling with children. $433 million would go toward stepping up border enforcement, including an increase in air surveillance. The U.S. Justice Department would receive $64 million to hire about 40 additional immigration judges to reduce the backlog of cases that is slowing the process of deportation. $300 million would go to the State Department to pay for repatriating and reintegrating migrants back into their home countries and help the governments in the region better control their borders." Why is it not enough? Well, as one major point, only hiring 40 new judges will not even put a dent in 290,000 individuals cases.

I Watched that yesterday, wow she's good at sticking to her talking points... what's with that clenched fist thing with the thumb over the index finger that politicians do, do they learn that somewhere?

After the grief that Bush got for flying over the Katrina damage, I would have guessed that the President would not be so tone deaf on the issue of being seen. Its all fluff, but sometimes fluff is important.

Yes, they are copying Clinton, who copied Kennedy, who probably copied it from someone else, possibly Satan.

Sometimes symbolism is important. Which of course, the president visiting the border would be. You’re right, It wouldn’t accomplish anything. But a visit would symbolize that the president cares. Sometimes politics boils down to perceptions and at times perceptions have nothing to do with reality. But going to Texas for a fund raiser and not visiting the border can and I am not saying it will, it can leave the impression that fund raising is more important than the crisis on the border.

President Obama did this once before in which I thought he would be roasted on, but it seems everyone overlooked it and it was a non-issue. But this is different, there has been a couple of days play on the president not visiting the border while attending the fund raiser. But then again, being wrong a couple of years ago, I could be wrong about this.

The first instance did not get any media play, this one seems to which is why I say it is different. I have heard on the news several times that the President is going to Texas on a fund raiser, but will not be visiting the border. The possibility exists that the perception could arise on which the president places his priorities, fund raising or the crisis on the border. If going by the first instance, it probably won’t happen, but it could. Time will tell.

Most great artists don't view their own work. Hopefully sarcasm is coming through.

He went to Sandy Hook and look how effective that was. This idea of a president going to the scene of whatever is nothing but political hacking. Bush did not go to New Orleans when it nearly sank. So what! What could he have done other than be on the nightly news? You see fool s like Obama hugging the parents of the soldier than ran from duty, was that for the soldier, the parents or was that for him? What could he do at the border other than a photo op of him looking pointlessly at the horizon over the landscape of Texas? "Oh, see how hev really cares". pffffft

The spokeswoman could have answered it better. I like how Beaudreaux addressed it in his post. I guess symbolism is very important to some people, but not to me. I don't think he should be forced to go. For what purpose? He knows what's going on there. His appearance will only cause chaos in an already chaotic atmosphere.

I think a photo op of President Obama and Governor Rick Perry flying to the border and visiting with the border guards would be worth a million dollars when it comes to his request for 3.7 billion. Remember the president and Governor Christie walking around in New Jersey after the hurricane. That was possibly worth 2 million votes from the indies who were going to vote for Romney.

Indies yearn for cooperation between parties, the Obama, Christie walk showed them cooperation. Sure a Perry/Obama trip to the border would be pure symbolism, but for a certain segment of the population symbolism plays a huge part in their politics. The perception could arise that the president really doesn't care about the border, that he only really cares about the fund raising aspect. His priority, fund raising over the border crisis.

Right. And if I remember correctly, Satan got his legislative start in the 1980's.

LOL So you won't mind the cost of the visit and the fact that men will be taken off the border to greet him and shake his hand? Fat chance. I can see the outrage already. There are no Americans in danger at the border and it has nothing to do with failing to send in FEMA during a natural disaster. That is what the outrage against Bush was about.

Why would either going or not going be an outrage? Maybe the loons will squawk, but all he has to do is wake up for that to happen. In this case, there's an argument to be made for either choice he makes.

The real outrage is that it's gotten to this point, and we've still basically done nothing but shuffle these people around in buses. As I wrote in my post that your post followed, both Congress and the White House share in any **** storm that results from this.

This is a real crisis. Not some right wing conspiracy or left wing debacle, and should be dealt with by both parties working together.

This should at the very least make them both give a little and do the right damned thing for a change.
