I don't think there is much point in having a white house press corps either. It is a spin factory devoid of anything truthful or meaningful. We should be judging politicians by what they do, not by what they say.

agreed.... and if she did not come with facts, I think it's perfectly proper to say " we don't have enough factual information to determine the answer to that question yet"

reporters will want answer "right now".. that's a given... but I think the press sect. has the responsibility/duty of giving factually accurate answers, even if that means not giving an answer for a reasonable period of time.

there is surely some "gotcha", but it's also incumbent on Carney to show some candid behavior, and not just "refer" in the sense of providing non-answers.
Press secretary has to be more then just managing the press corp - go out there and do a song and dance - provide nothing, and then walk off till the next days obfuscation.

If the question isn't answered, like happened most often with Carney, then the question must be asked again and again until it is answered.

I'm not sure he's the first outgoing press secretary to ever complain that the WH press corp beat him up. Typically a reporter follows a question with the same question when the PS is opaque with an answer, dodges an answer all together, won't engage in speculation, essentially FAILED to give a straight answer to a direct question, the truthful answer not serving the interests of the president or such. A press secretary is número uno water carrier for the POTUS. Poor Jay Carney!

Carneys job is to suck it up and deal with it. Ideally his job would be to tell the truth and inform the press, but instead he chose, most likely as ordered by the cheif of staff, to spin, lie, and mislead. What do you expect from a Presidency that does not respect different opinions. Sadly, I think Gibb was actually worse. He enjoyed it.

I read the OP article, too, and it didn't read as if Jay Carney was putting down the WH brass at all. In fact, Carney makes clear that he enjoyed his job as WH Press Secretary made clear that he was proud of a lot of the work he did. He was just frustrated by the media circus he generally had to put with.

For quite sometime now the goal of any press secretary has been to put off answering and evade the questions. bit most important it is to put forth the White House spin on the news or happenings of the day. This goes back to Larry Speaks if not further. Bill Moyer comes to mind for LBJ.

understood, and agreed. Maybe it's just the way he'd sneer, or his complete disdain as expressed in the OP that is the ultimate insult to "transparency"

Perhaps, I know I stopped listening to him long ago. There are people who just rub you the wrong way. I do not think even if the white press briefing is useless that it will ever be done away with. It is that press briefing that the white house uses to get their talking points out to the press. Carney was probably no better or any worse than any other press secretary. After all he was only doing the president's biding in trying to get the white house version of what is happening or opinions out to the press.

I might say the same thing about a press Secratary.

IMO, the POTUS should hold daily press conferences and reasonably answer the media's questions...five days a week.

The POTUS is there to serve the American people.

And since he/she (theoretically) knows most what is going on in government, then it is he/she who should answer the media's questions...five days a week.

I detest cowardly POTUS's who shun press conferences and leave it to their Press Secratary's to answer the public's questions.

The POTUS serves the people...not the other way around.


Btw, Jay Carney seemed like most Press Secrataries to me...worse then useless.
