Canada pulls the plug on the U.S. Keystone Pipeline – will send oil to Asia | Watts Up With That?

Obama’s inability to make a decision on Keystone has finally yielded a result – Canada has made the decision for him.

Breitbart reports Canada has just approved the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project – a major pipeline to ship Canadian oil to Asia.

The Canadian oil will still be burnt – in Asia, instead of America.

All the jobs and energy security which Canadian oil could have delivered to America, will instead be delivered to Asia

Way to go Barry.

I couldn't care less one way or the other on the pipeline, but what I do have a problem with is keeping our friends to the north cooling their heels for so long. It's disrespectful.

Selling it to the Japanese or Chinese?

I guess Japanese, since the Chinese would only pay in poisend plastic toys and childslaves.

To be fair, Canada has not dropped the Keystone pipeline - in fact, the Keystone pipeline is a private business project, not a government project, pushed by Trans Canada Pipelines. Secondly, there's enough oil in reserve in the oilsands to fill pipelines to the Canadian west coast, the Canadian east coast and the American south for 30 plus years. The Canadian government will continue to support Keystone while they approve the process for building Northern Gateway and reversing and upgrading the existing eastern pipeline to Quebec/New Brunswick.

That said, it should also be noted that the Canadian Supreme Court just this past week ruled on some native non-treaty land claims in British Columbia in favour of the native petitioners, giving them "ownership" of large swaths of the British Columbia interior and shoreline. As such, some of the native bands that objected to Northern Gateway now have to be involved in more detailed negotiations and that could delay the building of the pipeline although it will be built eventually, presuming the Conservative government remains in power in Canada - the two opposition parties oppose the Northern Gateway and one of them also opposes Keystone.

Obama really is irrelevant at this point - it's been delayed for so long that there will be a new President in office in such a short time, relatively speaking, that doesn't matter what he does now. He can keep conning the enviro-nuts into thinking he's their hero while he continues to burn American coal and ship American coal to China and India, vastly outstripping any damage to the environment that the oilsands could ever cause.

You joke, but in the 80's I worked for a company that set up a plant for China, and how to get paid
was a real sticking point. At that point in time there was considerable differences in the value of their money.
My company received title to several cargo ships in payment. (Ships having real world assessable value)

Ah so. So this is what Obama meant by the pivot to the Pacific and Asia.

The Keystone Pipeline has not been dropped. It is a private project and TransCanada has not signaled that it is abandoning its application with the State Department.

Come now, it must be Obama's fault.

Hey, who can blame Obama for resisting when millions in donations from far left eco support is promised. Politics outweighs jobs and another step towards independence from ME oil right?

I suppose so, American politics as usual.

could care less. this has been a disaster for obama no matter which way you cut it. this should have been approved years ago. over and done with.
yet we have study after study till he so he can't keep not having to make a decision.

all study's show little to no impact for the pipeline.

Chalk up another over reaction from the right. Read the thread.

chalk another disaster for obama which has been a disaster from when he got into office.

this is what happens when you elect someone who has never run anything in his life. so much for the most intelligent president of all time as the left was championing.
this guy is an idiot.

Reading is your friend.

Reading is your friend.

it's your friend as well.

China just bought the majority stake in the oil sands. if need be they will buy the full stake if they get the oppertunity.
this was another loss to the disaster that has been the obama administration.

more so at the cost of jobs and energy that could have flowed into the US. announcing the buiding of the pipeline might have releaved some stress on the oil market.
nope.

Come now, it must be Obama's fault.

It's only Obama's craven politicizing of the issue that has delayed the project, but America lets him get away with it, so not really his fault. It's like the Kardashians having a TV show - if there's an audience for the nonsense, someone will sell it.

Obama the pig says no to Canada and allows the nuts in the Middle East to burn the oil refineries and sends troops back to the Middle East. Yeah, he has got to be one of the greatest stooges of all time.

Hey, I consider myself on the right and Right and I'm not overreacting to anything.

No you haven't overreacted to this. In fact you brought some facts to the table. You'll notice that plenty of other righties certainly have their collective bvds twisted around their ears..

nope.

Nobody owns the oilsands other than the Canadian and Provincial governments, who issue permits to companies to extract the oil and ship it to market in exchange for royalty payments to the governments. The Chinese do have interests in some of the companies that have been created and/or are holders of such permits, but they by no means have "a majority stake in the oil sands" - that's just nonsense.

That's US politics and enviro-politics in action - no different from those on the left bleating away that the Canadian oilsands are going to destroy the planet. But a discussion containing both views and a few facts is good for everyone, no?
