Veterans aren’t happy with a recent op-ed by the Washington Post, which charged that the Apache, Comanche, Chinook, Lakota, Cheyenne and Kiowa military vehicles were a “greater symbolic injustice” than the NFL’s Washington Redskins’ name.

“Even if the NFL and Redskins brass come to their senses and rename the team, a greater symbolic injustice would continue to afflict Indians — an injustice perpetuated not by a football club but by our federal government,” Simon Waxman of the Boston Review wrote for the Post on Thursday.

Kevin Schooler wrote: “What floors me is that for the most part, it isn’t American Indians who are offended. It is guilt-ridden white liberals being offended on their behalf. How’s that for paternalism?”

Army vets blast PC police for attacking Apache, Chinook helicopters as racist - Washington Times

Should we change the Militaries use of Native American tribal names?

You GOT to be kidding me.

It's called Apache because it is BADASS, like Apaches. Badass isn't insulting, unless you're some kinda wuss.

Ye gawd, this PC crap has gone insane...

Call them Nija, Derwish or Huns. Why talk about indigenous heros?

Well, pc is wuss.

Depends on whether or not we want to project consistency in our political correctness.

I'm going to say the PC crowd won't give this any attention, unless they can get the Redskins to change their name.

Right, which could actually happen.

When we put that much importance on names, instead of sticks & stones, we're pretty much hopeless.

I totally agree with that.

As if we didnt know this was coming....

Seriously. Its time to let the 10% of Indians that are upset about this stupid argument win the day and eliminate every Indian name from every city, state, street building, sports team, and everything else. Respect their wishes and eliminate them from the maps, history books, and culture. For their own good. Then everyone will be happy. OH...sure...there will still be the drug problems, domestic violence, high incidents of rape, lack of education, unemployment, poverty, etc....but...the IMPORTANT stuff...well...lets call it a win.

It would appear that you are much more insulting than those that are using Indian names.

Being half Jewish and half Irish, I have a couple of suggestions.

1) Call them Hebrew Hammers.

2) Call them Mick Mullah O'Killers.

If Native Americans don't want their name on the helicopter, I will be happy to take that name off their hands. LOL.

At least they aren't upset with Tomahawk Cruise Missles.

Maybe they can just call it what it is. AH-64. And leave it at that.

(Oh no...he's on to me...)

Pointing out the absurdity of ones argument tends to come across as 'insulting' to some. Sorry you have your feelings hurt.

Well one reason is that aside from being names of fierce warrior cultures the names also honor former enemies which the US Army fought against.

These tribes often put up very violent resistance and although they ultimately lost the US army did not always have a lot of fun fighting them.

Seems how the US Army is the only Army I know of to honor a former enemy this way.

Somehow I just cannot see a british army helicoprter being named the Zulu or the Continental. Can't See a russian Army helicopter being named Wehrmacht.

Can't see a French military helicopter being named " surrender to everyone "

To get PC, the military should just dump all the historic warrior names and just go with one letter & numbering.

H-64, like they do with F-14, F-16, etc.. Next they'll be wanting to stop naming streets after great Americans, like MLK Drive, Jane Adams Expressway, Dan Ryan Expressway, etc....

Personally I thought it was a nice gesture and honored the earlier enemies too.

With whom are you speaking?

My feelings are A-OK.
