Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

Typical racist claim when confronted.

No, you've demonstrated you support racism. You see no problem with black people calling white people crackers. I don't support calling a black man a nigger, but YOU support racism. You have demonstrated this FACT.

Please keep posting though, you continue to show others you support racism. :lamo

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

It seems to me that as we advance technologically and our lives become easier that people have a lot more free time and energy to spend elsewhere like coming up with things to get offended over, It really is ridiculous. I say we rename them the Washington Crackers. Being white I really could care less. I have soooo many more important things to worry about in life then what someone names a team and if any person gets offended well perhaps they should take a big step back and reevaluate their priorities in life. Racial slurs and names only matter because we allow them to matter to us. When we shrug them off as nothing to us it loses all weight and simply becomes a word but some people just cant grow up enough to see that.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

Why is there a difference?

When a black person says they hate whites, it means nothing to me. It will never affect my ability to get housing, employment or a fair shake in court. It's pissing in the wind, and I can safely ignore it.

When a white person says they hate blacks, it means something to them. It means they will not get a fair shake in housing, employment and court. It means they will suffer systemic injustice. It cannot be safely ignored.

That's the difference.

Typical racist claim when confronted.
Wow, you are way out in left field on that.

Wow, you are way out in left field on that.

Really, you can't understand that?

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

80% apathy sounds about right, and means nothing.

There is a poll on MSN.com right now. Running 84% in support to keep the name. I wouldn't call people actually voting in a poll "apathy".

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

So the Redskins calling themselves the Redskins means that Native Americans can't get housing?

Apathetic regarding the issue and/or the sport, not apathetic regarding polls!

Racism perpetuates systemic injustice. Ignoring that systemic injustice is required to equate racial bigotry by minorities against whites with racism.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

Racism perpetuates systemic injustice.

Racism does, but a football team called the Redskins does not, so therefore it isn't racist.

So nothing will make you understand that this is a non issue except for those who just cant stand to go through the day and not be offended about something.

Unless they move the team to another city, it will always be the Washington Redskins.

The important thing to note is that ignoring systemic injustice is a foundation for much of racist propaganda. Ignoring it allows racists to claim blacks' woes are entirely their own making, and thereby make accusations of inferiority claiming evidence by "fair competition". It also allows them to claim victim status regarding things like AA and black racial bigotry. And it allows them to claim racism by whites is merely name calling.

Removing the ability for racists to ignore systemic injustice, by refusing to equate racism with racial bigotry, chops a leg off racists. That is why they react so violently and spam the dictionary claiming it proves racism is equal to bigotry. With racism equal to bigotry, the systemic is ignored and they are able to build propaganda.

I think everyone can understand that if they try.

True racists do not accept your "systemic injustice" argument. In fact most will burrow further into their beliefs the more you try to change the meaning of what it is they believe.
This is a losing battle. The bulk of the nation by far does not sympathize with this new cause. Its a false flag cry of racism. No one is a Redskins fan, because we hate the native Indians.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

That reply is woefully insufficient.

Sure man. Keep thinking that. You are in the vast minority of persons calling for the 'skins to change the name and logo.
And while I don't agree with what Dan Snyder has done with the team in many respects, keeping the name is paramount to him and its fan base.
Get used to it. Don't like it that much. Show up in DC and protest the name in the parking lot. Good luck.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

name and logo.

The logo can stay if they change the name to the tribe represented, with the approval of (and payment to) that tribe.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

“Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t” and then an image of a Redskins helmet.

Unless you are from one of several majority Indian High Schools...

Besides...I thought we already established that Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills are really white people with Native American heritage.

Citation? I've seen that claim twice without citation.

Anyway, it's not the first time a HS had a racist name that needed to be changed.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

The funny thing about that commercial is that "Redskin" was the the term used by native Americans to describe themselves, in the same way they called Europeans "white man".

So the commercial is really just lying to you.
Whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaat? NO!!!!

Been paid, been ok'd. Almost one hundred years ago.

That doesn't make etymological sense. Why would one race be referred to as "<color> <man>" and the other "<color> <skin>". That's inherently degrading to the race not called man.

I don't believe a culture would label others 'man' and themselves less.

I think you're the one lying or mistaken.

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

People need to grow up and stop concerning themselves with what teams are named.

What race do you belong to? Are you "one of the good ones"?

Then just change the name. Why does logo need to change?

Re: Tonighjt June 11 Watch The NBA Half Time For A Redskins Protest of Racism

This started back in 1933, you know back then "FOR WHITES ONLY" signs were everywhere, there was not equal rights laws and other dumb stuff like that.

Tommy Yazzie, superintendent of the Red Mesa school district on the Navajo Nation reservation, grew up when Navajo children were forced into boarding schools to disconnect them from their culture. Some were punished for speaking their native language.

Today, he sees environmental issues as the biggest threat to his people.

The high school football team in his district is the Red Mesa Redskins.

"We just don't think that [name] is an issue," Yazzie said. "There are more important things, like busing our kids to school, the water settlement, the land quality, the air that surrounds us. Those are issues we can take sides on."

"Society, they think it's more derogatory because of the recent discussions," Yazzie said. "In its pure form, a lot of Native American men, you go into the sweat lodge with what you've got -- your skin. I don't see it as derogatory."

Neither does Eunice Davidson, a Dakota Sioux who lives on the Spirit Lake reservation in North Dakota. "It more or less shows that they approve of our history," she said.
Just How Many Indians Think "Redskins" Is a Slur? | NBC4 Washington

Six months after Wiscasset High School became the Wolverines, the varsity boys basketball team showed up for a home game wearing t–shirts featuring the school’s old mascot.

When the players walked into the gym wearing white t‐shirts emblazoned with the word Redskins, the crowd gave the team ‒ and the t-shirts ‒ a standing ovation.

The game in January 2012 provided the citizens of Wiscasset, a small town on the Maine coast, one last chance to cheer for a controversial mascot that many considered an important link to the community’s past.

After months of contentious debate, the regional school board voted in January 2011 to drop the name, siding with those in the community who considered the moniker a racist anachronism over the majority of Wiscasset residents who favored tradition.

“Some felt like it was the last piece of the past they were hanging onto,” said Wiscasset High School principal Deb Taylor, a 1989 graduate of the school. “The power of the desire to go back to the past is very strong.”

Though the school has been officially represented by a red and black wolverine for nearly two years, some in the community have refused to let go of the Redskins.
