That's not a decision for white billionaires to make. I respect infinitely more the protest being made by native tribes.

You're right, it's not a decision for "white billionaires" to make. It's also not a decision for white media members to make either.

I've got factual evidence of polls showing 90% of native americans don't believe the name needs to be changed. You have a handful of tribes and native american activists complaining about it. I respect infinitely more the majority as opposed to the loud minority trying to claim they speak for the majority.

The Redskins should keep their name. Neither so called "social justice" activists, nor the most easily offended members of a minority group should be the ones to determine what is and what is not offensive, and I think that's what's going on here. Here's my test for whether a word is offensive. Is it recognizable as offensive? Correct me if i'm wrong, but in the case of "redskin", i don't think it would occur to anyone to refer to a native american person as a redskin (before activists created this controversy at least). I've never heard of a contemporary native american being called a redskin. When people think of the words "gook" or "chink", they think asian slur. When people think of the word "nigger", they think black slur. When people thought of the word "redskins", they thought of a football team. If the only reason people believe that a word is offensive is because professional activists told them that it's offensive, then it's not offensive. My opinion is shaped by bitter experiences I had in college. I had to take mandatory classes where professors taught me that i'm "oppressed" and "disadvantaged" (i'm asian american). In my opinion, the media caters to people like that in determining what's offensive while ignoring the views of more moderate people such as myself.

Even if that's the case, i would certainly bet that 90% won't care if it did change either. I tend to not respect the majority opinion about anything. If it was some intellectual elite collection of tribal activists who put the ad together, I'll go with their views.

Fact remains it's still a disgrace to have this in our nation's capital and i don't see why anyone would object vehemently to it being changed, unless it's the team owner's fear of losing some marketing identity, or a dislike of natives.

The Redskins aren't in our nation's capital, they're in Landover, MD. Back in the 90s, when the Redskins' owner requested a new stadium, Washington DC wouldn't allow it unless a team name change was part of the deal. They built the new stadium in Landover, MD instead.

Wow. So if a few "elites" deem something to be "offensive" enough to warrant actions, the will of the masses is irrelevant because the "elites" somehow deserve more credence because......what? That they're louder? Beautiful logic there.

and i don't see why anyone would object vehemently to it being changed, unless it's the team owner's fear of losing some marketing identity, or a dislike of natives.
A desire to maintain tradition and history, and to maintain the identity of the team you've potentially been a fan of for years. A desire to not see political correctness and activist pressure by a small minority bully people into censoring themselves needlessly. A desire for ones previously invested money in team items to remain worthwhile. A desire by some in the native american community to not see their feelings be falsely represented in an effort to change the name of a team they support.

I could go on, but I don't have to because in the reality your premise is flawed.

The question is not why someone would object to changing it. Those who don't want it changed are in favor of the status quo. They don't have to "want" anything. It is incumbant upon those screaming for it to change to put forth a compelling enough argument as to why it SHOULD change.

I find it amusing that this whole debate is void of common sense. Why would an NFL team pick a name to be derogatory? It wouldn't. Bottom line is that the name was picked to symbolize and embrace the fierce fighting spirit of native americans. Its complimentary actually.

The issue is simply the perpetually offensive, those that are offended by everything. If they take issue with the Redskins's name, don't watch their games. Pretty simple really.
