Spare me the "try to keep up". They're very accomplished individuals, each in their own right. Belittling them with "never did anything but get married" is just that.

On a moral level, this is a republic -- any civilian-citizen that can convince the body politic they should be the leader is certified to rule by their election. The hermit who lived in a cave for thirty years deserves to be president if he can convince the public his is the heart of a leader.
On a practical level, the Peter Principle is as valid today as it was when Laurence Peter wrote the theory almost 50 years ago. As Ross Perot put it, if a guy is very competent at running the local hardware store, that does not extrapolate to him being competent to run Wal-mart. So yes, anybody, from the local janitor all the way up to the highest echelons of government, constitution, and industry can aspire to be a Congressman or Senator or President of the United States. But that does not extrapolate to everybody having the skills, temperament, vision, or ability to do a good job doing that or being effective in the job.

The skills it takes to be a Congressmen these days aren't the ones that make one effective at the job, so its a moot point; the hermit and whatever dysfunction he may or may not bring with his lack of practice is an equally valid choice alongside Joe Banker and Bill Lawyer. Having the skills to get things done is irrelevant when the system checkmates action so that society winds up grinding along into economic and political oblivion.
If you notice something good in yourself, give credit to God, not to yourself, but be certain the evil you commit is always your own and yours to acknowledge.

So what skills do you think it takes to be an effective Congressman or Senator or President these days? Not the skills I mean to perpetuate the permanent political class, but the skills we the people expect those we elect to high office to have?

This is assuming that management skills are irrelevant, or an understanding of what is important to commerce and industry or what constitutes effective education or the dynamics that give people an incentive to take calculated risks to try, to build, grow, improve, expand, innovate, and experiment, or the importance of liberty, family, community, and values.

I find it a rather difficult thing to avoid.
So what qualifies her for the Senate?
Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

It's an apartheid State for chrissake...

Until we can devise a way to correct this, we'll always be putting crooks, criminals, and other cockamamie candidates in office.
