Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW[W:28]

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

You do realize the deck was and still is stacked against him right? You can't go against the gov't. They won't allow it and will not allow a fair trial. What else is he to do? Just continue the status quo?

He knew what he was doing, and he will be punished accordingly.

The government needs to be punished accordingly.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

I am not a left winger. If anyone has betrayed the US it is the NSA agents spying on Americans and the rat degenerate pieces of **** scum in office who continue to allow the NSA to spy on Americans. Last I checked the constitution is the supreme law of the land and all those elected official made an oath to uphold and defend the constitution.

I appreciate the sentiment-but the NSA agents were complying with what has been found to be legal. I dont expect low level agents to make these decisions. Rather, I blame the higher ups and the man in charge-Obama for this. Remember, Obama ran against the Patriot act, and it was a sunsetting law-Obama had to act in the affirmative to keep it as law, and then to expand it greatly. Now we spy on everyone, and not just in the US. And no, Im not cool with it in the least.

Seeing how the Constitution is the supreme law of the land the NSA agents were not obeying the law. No lower level law can trump the Constitution.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Responsible? We dont know who has what, we know what he claims to a journalist. And beyond that, I dont consider how he gave the info over to be responsible. In his own words he gave bulk data to journalists, and trusted them to release info that wouldnt be harmful to people.

In the interview he states that we haven't heard of anybody harmed by this data being released-but that does not mean nobody has been harmed. People aren't exactly going to go to the news and say "hey this info we got helped us kill 2 informants, THANKS SNOWDEN! Nor would the US confirm or deny or even address this publicly-which would lend credibility to the info Snowden leaked being good info.

I consider the release of information that reveals criminal acts by the government to be very responsible, even at first glance. Hell, I consider it to be an act of patriotism, whether Ellsberg, Snowden, Manning, Drake, Kiriakou or anybody else.

Government crimes should be exposed. The individuals who were responsible for those crimes should be prosecuted.

But hell, I'm a hopelessly romantic idealist, fantasizing that the rule of law operates in this country.

Snowden did everything he could, and he did it right. Drake and the others who tried to work within the system were prosecuted and imprisoned.

Snowden did the right thing.

Yes, the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and I am against these very invasive laws. But Im saying there is an entire army of lawyers who are going to present this as very much in line with prior legislation and the Constitution.

Although I am against the NSA tactics, thats only a small portion of the data leaked-this is about much more. And now he's hiding in Russia, and trying to get to Cuba or latin America or whatever. He's still guilty of high crimes, in any case.

He is "hiding" in Russia because his government has revoked his passport and declared him Public Enemy #1, making his safe return to the US impossible.

High Crimes are the deliberate violation of Constitutional principles by elected officials.

Snowden's "crimes" are against the state, petty offenses that mean something only to a bureaucrat. He is a true patriot, willing to accept the depredations of the state so that his fellow citizens might be informed of government crimes.

They revoked his passport because he stole and distributed states secrets, thats not petty. And lets not forget he was trying to get to cuba.
He likely wont be able to return to the US.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Right. Data mining is a potent tool and the Fourth Amendment is not worth the paper it's written on.

It is probably the most important dichotomy to be resolved.

No, you're right--in this case it's not petty, it's heroic.

I don't think Snowden is necessarily a hero, I don't think any of us knows enough yet to know whether he was in the right or wrong. But, if he's in the right on this, it is good to see the government get bitch slapped when they break the law.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

This "hero" of yours is going to make someone a fine wife in prison.

I fervently hope you are not speaking from experience.

He is stuck in Russia. He never wanted to stay there to begin with. If my memory serves, I believe his choices for exile were Iceland and Ecuador but the US made sure the door was shut for those choices. A lot easier to make him look like a villain if he is forced to work with Putin.

No one said any of this is "petty." Point is, you are making it sound like he chose Russia when he was forced to stay.

Ah, now we are promoting rape for someone who exposes illegal govt activities?

I dont think its going to make him look much worse. He will never be allowed back here, certainly.

Why was he in Russia in the first place? Because he was fleeing HK and prior to that the US, after stealing and releasing state secrets. Frankly where is, is not the issue.

As stated, he exposed much more than just illegal govt activities, and whats more he didn't even screen the data, he let the press do that.

In the traditional American scheme of things, do you see the media (journalists) as having a role in keeping the government playing honestly? Is the Fourth Estate really necessary, and what role should it play in our form of government?

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Probably not. But I doubt he would want to come back except to see family. He will probably end up moving to a more democratic nation as he intended once our govt gets the stick out of its butt.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Why was he in Russia in the first place?

Because he was in transit. It was one of the few places that would take him at the time. If he truly wanted to stay in Russia he wouldn't be seeking asylum in the EU now would he?

Because he was fleeing HK and prior to that the US, after stealing and releasing state secrets.

Secrets that were illegally obtained in the first place. You conservatives are supposed to defend the Constitution, not defend constitutional violations.

Frankly where is, is not the issue.

Yet, you and others in the "Snowden Is a Traitor!" camp keep bringing up Russia as if it was his first choice of countries to seek asylum in.
