Fast-food workers kick off global labor action

i started out in 1986 making at 3.50 an hour. nearly 25 later in 2011 i was making 15.70 an hour at that job. i worked my butt off to get what i was earning and these people just want it given to them.

HELL no!!
Good for you. But that "raise" also came with several raises in the minimum wage...

btw you didn't address the points i made.
What about the college?
If minimum wage kept up with inflation it would be $10.50 http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs...-increase-in-the-minimum-wage-is-long-overdue

If it kept up with productivty as well it would be 21.72. Minimum Wage Would Be $21.72 If It Kept Pace With Increases In Productivity: Study

So i think the $15 call is a solid compromise.

Actually I'm just laughing at your sad attempt at forming an argument. Your only solution is to informally circumvent established policies, that could risk the employment of the said employee, rather than a legitimate course of action. Your argument is silly fallacy.

Sounds pretty defensive from here. Your support ends when the dollars leave YOUR pocket. Once that is suggested it's excuse after excuse from you.

With raising intuition costs. College is become more of a distant dream for low income individuals.

Do you perhaps mean rising TUITION costs? Intuition is something else altogether.

You new, so I'll give you a break. The thread isn't about just raising the minimum wage in one city or one state, but for fast food workers in several countries. Note the title of the thread. A member here indicated they supported that struggle. So step up while those workers are engaged in the struggle. Help them make their nut. I didn't suggest you tip just one worker when you visit a FF joint, but ALL of them. Enough of you talkers start walking the support talk and they workers will have a much easier go of it.
Again, totally fallacious reasoning. There are only two buildings that could enact the policies supported by the user: Congress and the White House. This is the world we live in, we don't live in Alice in Wonderland. If you don't believe that then go and bother those military fanatics, climate change advocates, anti-abortion fanatics and tell them to go war, clean up the environment themselves, help give birth to babies etc.

Alice in Wonderland.

Yawn... :coffeepap

I given no excuse. I've explained to you thoroughly that your fallacious argument is not possible.

College is there for those that work for it. Yes, it means WORK, ya know that old fashioned "no partying, scrape by and work your ass off" work?

Also, one need not "go to college" to earn marketable skills. I understand you care, you want people to have nice things, but you cannot, it does not work to just throw money at the problem.

The path to success is hard work, not get rich quick scheming.

When I got out the Navy I had a 40Kjob lined up that fell through. I was making 8 bucks an hour and the wife (who has a degree) was working part time. We now broke 80K this year and she's on tap to get a quarter mil or better check when the company sells. We lived with very little, and busted our asses. Guess what? We didn't whine, we didn't demand high pay for **** work. We worked hard, I changed jobs, she did too eventually landing solid, salaried jobs.

Because we understood no one owed us anything, we didn't deserve a living wage, just because life was hard, we decided min wage wasn't enough and worked for better.

That concept, is lost to a whole generation of entitled ****s and the rest are brain washed into thinking that hard work is mean.

mine did not!

i made the point about college which you didn't address.

these people want something for nothing.

i worked in fast food for one year and learned how to do everything in less then 4 months. fast food is what's called unskilled labor.

Dear Alice (thanks for signing your post ),

Congress and the White House cannot raise a global minimum wage for fast food workers.

It's funny how military vets get State-support but the very idea of extending state support to others seem frightening don't they? I wonder how much you were getting paid by the tax-payer.

They can do it in America. If you don't like the system you're free to go elsewhere. I'm sure the user was supporting a legislative minimum wage hike in the USA but morally supporting the movement elsewhere, that's a logical interpretation.

Actually, when you considered the hours worked, it came out to be less than minimum wage at the time (1969). But hey, we weren't hourly.

So, you too are okay with spending other people's money, fair enough. Not very logical of you to consider yourself conservative. Sock?

You sound like a jaded old man who is not aware that times have changed. The costs of living when you where in your youth are very different now. Going to college during your era would run you around 12,000 dollars to get a degree. No it's around 30,000 and increasing.

You pigeonholing a whole group of people because you think you have us all pegged. But you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. The job market has changed vastly. Getting employed, even with a degree, is increasingly harder. Many bachelors degree holders are being forced to resort to the food industry and other low end jobs because the job market is so saturated at the degree level.

Fair enough. But I'm sure there are other State benefits for retiring Vets. I could be wrong though.

Oh, should have told you perhaps. I'm a conservative yes but I'm in England. "Conservative" means a totally different thing for the English

Your figures are a tad screwed, but college was a major expense families saved for all their child's life even then. And who'd have thought that English major would have a hard time finding a job after wasting their college money. Go figure.

It was in the last 10 years bub. This century. Whats changed is that people think they are owed something. You aunt owed ****.

That explains it. You folks are screwed, blued and tattooed as it is - you're forgiven. I'm glad you enjoy the nanny state, you're living in the right place to enjoy all the fruits of it. Not my cup of tea mate.

No people who are not fortunate enough to afford higher education despite hard work desire more affordable living. And economist, those who actually know what they are talking about support this.

Not every family can afford saving up for their children. welcome to the real world. Where people are poor and struggling even while working 9 - 5 or longer.

Lol I'm glad you think good of us (!)

But you are right, we live in a massive government nanny state, you would probably get a culture shock if you lived here for a few months.

:lamo Hilarious!

Really, 9-5? Oh the horror! Not every family could afford college back in the 60s either. A great many of us worked all through our college days. Sometimes I had two jobs while attending college. Lived on apples and peanut butter until the folks stopped by to visit. That's the real world, and for those who still know how to work toward a goal, it's still like that.

You conflating two different eras that are worlds apart. College was way cheaper during the 60's than it is now. If it was hard for some then it's damn near impossible for some now.

Thanks, but actually I do see the beauty of your country (amazing history and landscape) and think it's a wonderful place for those who don't mind being subjects. No objection whatsoever, as long as it stays on that side of the pond.

Firstly, that really looks a little sadistic, laughing while you're discussing a poor family. lol

Secondly, real wages have not been increasing with productivity in America from 1978 onwards:
