What? That's not why NSA stores metadata.

Of course it is. Doesn't mean that government shills and those who feed from her teat won't try.

It doesn't matter why a government spies on its citizens en masse. There is no justifiable reason for it.

The US government’s privacy board has sharply rebuked President Barack Obama over the National Security Agency’s mass collection of American phone data, saying the program defended by Obama last week was illegal and ought to be shut down.

A divided Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent and long-troubled liberties advocate in the executive branch, issued a report on Thursday that concludes the NSA’s collection of every US phone record on a daily basis violates the legal restrictions of the statute cited to authorize it, section 215 of the Patriot Act.

Not only did the board conclude that the bulk surveillance was a threat to constitutional liberties, it could not find “a single instance” in which the program “made a concrete difference in the outcome of a terrorism investigation”.

Huh? Then why did you respond to my post with that?

Anyway, if it was spying I might agree with you.

BBC News - Cisco calls for curb on NSA surveillance efforts

NSA intercepting Cisco hardware routers before sending them onto the Cisco client who bought the routers.

The first allegations about NSA staff intercepting deliveries of Cisco hardware came from papers given by whistleblower Edward Snowden to journalist Glenn Greenwald.

"If these allegations are true," wrote Mr Chambers in a letter published in the Financial Times, "these actions will undermine confidence in our industry and in the ability of technology companies to deliver products globally."

In addition, pictures have circulated online of NSA staff opening packing crates containing Cisco gear. The NSA is believed to have intercepted and altered the networking hardware so the agency can more easily gather information about the people and companies it targets.

"We simply cannot operate this way," Mr Chambers wrote. "Our customers trust us to be able to deliver to their doorsteps products that meet the highest standards of integrity and security."

To restore confidence in Cisco and other tech firms, President Obama should draw up new rules to govern the way the NSA operates to ensure its conduct was held to a high standard, he said.

No no no, these are little semantic games Big Brother lovers play. Metadata isn't spying, even though it is the collection of your data and information without warrant. Because metadata is....meta. Any given piece of it doesn't give much information or detail anything. Which is true, but the point of meta data is that it is meta, and that means the aggregation of it, the development of search algorithms and more efficient sorting, does mean that significant information can be discovered, logged, and used against you without even the slightest bit of necessity towards obtaining a warrant.

But Big Brother supporters and those making their lunch off the teat of government spying can't say anything to counter the spying...it's where their meals come from.
