Slippery slopes suck, huh? With the court judgment that schools can do whatever the hell they want, in response to the freedom of expression of the students, they really opened Pandora's box.

IMO, this kids sounds like a spoiled little **** ass, that will make a good, obedient Libbo one day. He probably hates America...but...I certainly support his right to express himself and think it's totally ridiculous to suspend the kid, because he refuses to say The Pledge.

Mason Michalec, a sophomore at Needville High School, claims he’s taken a pledge not to say the Pledge.

“I’ve basically said it from the time I was in kindergarten to earlier this year and that’s when I decided I was done saying it,” he told KHOU.

actually i back this kid. The school is in the wrong. if you would have read an article on this kid he is anything but what you say.
he has a reason that he is protesting it and it has to do with the overreach of the government.

My opinion of him is neither, here, nor there.

There shouldn't be a pledge anyway... It has a certain, fascistic tinge to it I would find uncomfortable.

those are two totally unrelated things, of course thats why hes just a kid he doesn't know his poo hole from his goo hole.

and i quote from you "IMO, this kids sounds like a spoiled little **** ass, that will make a good, obedient Libbo one day. He probably hates America"
doesn't sound like it is neither here nor there to me.

from the kid himself
"Needville High School sophomore Mason Michalec told KHOU.com he refused to stand for the Pledge because of his opposition to government spying.

"I’m really tired of our government taking advantage of us,” Michalec said. "I don’t agree with the NSA spying on us. And I don’t agree with any of those Internet laws."

As far as the topic is concerned, it's neither here, nor there.

I agree with the kid, but he should expand the scope of his protest to all violations of privacy the government is involved in, like for example, the TSA. Besides, requiring people take a pledge of allegiance to the state is hardly something we should be doing. In fact, the pledge of allegiance shouldn't even exist.

More CONvoluted history??? When did 'the courts' decide schools could do 'whatever the hell they want'???

The Supreme Court already ruled on this back in 1943, Texas was part of the USofA back then. Read 'West Virginia Board of Education v Barnette'. It specifically addresses the pledge and students. Was that ruling voided????

The article says he loves the country and is mad about the NSA spying on everyone.... sounds like a Good American to me- PRO or CON. I salute him... :2wave:

Care to cite which court decision it was that said schools can do whatever the hell they want?

Considering the pledge has to do with the country and not the govt, he doesn't seem to know what he is talking about

If I promise my loyalty or commitment to the country how am I not pledging allegiance to the government?

The country is the ideals where as the govt is made for the people by the people and can be changed based on how the people see fit but the ideals America was founded on are immortal. The kid has every right to not say the pledge, however his claim of not doing as a protest to the govt is just ignorant.

He's protesting the NSA. That I get. The other thing is "Internet laws"?

Screw that, I wouldn't say the pledge of allegiance either. These are our high school kids, not the Hitler Youth.

i think he is mixed up and is refering to the consistant court rulings that students do not give up their free speech when they are in school and this is correct.
not standing for the pledge is just as protected as anything else.

as long as he is not causing a distrubance in what he is doing he is free not to stand and say the pledge for whatever reason he wants.

And that would be your right. However, the Hitler Youth swore and oath to Hitler, not to Germany.

What do you mean the country is the ideals? What are these ideals and why aren't they mentioned in the pledge?

Re: Texas high school suspends student — for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegia

Court: School can ban US flag shirts for safety

Left the door wide ass open to deprive students of their 1st Amendment rights.

umm that case isn't decided yet and if it goes to the SCOTUS they will uphold the 1st court ruling which is the correct ruling.
the 9th circuit court is filled with a bunch of looney's anyway.

Until it goes to the SC, it is what it is.

Re: Texas high school suspends student — for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegia

I wonder if this Texas school requires non-citizen students like foreign exchange students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance?

Re: Texas high school suspends student — for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegia

I have to side the kid with on this one. No one should be coerced into pledging anything.

Don't get me wrong. I stand tall and proud at every opportunity to pledge my allegiance to the United States of America.

In Texas, as a kid in school, we had to stand each morning and say it. We didn't know or care what we were pledging to. We were just little kids. It was just another nursery rhyme kind of thing to us. Routine. We all knew the words by the end of the first grade. We still didn't know what it meant and we didn't care.

That is called indoctrination. Some might even say brain washing. I can't imagine anyone of approving brain washing but some do.

The best way to say the pledge is to mean it. Not because you were just taught the words.

A libbo? Did you actually read the article, or did you just look at the title of the article, and conclude that he was a liberal based on that alone? Because, if you had actually read the article, you would have read that the kid refuses to cite the pledge because he disagrees with the government spying on people! And who is doing the spying? The Obama administration, of course.

Way to go with the partisan hackery. I give you an A+ on that.
