Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77:155]

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

There is no in between. There is nothing in the middle but a large gaping chasm that swallows you up into a black hole of non commitment and babble. You can however be independent by being lib on some things, con on others.

And then there is the Y axis as well: Are you authoritarian, libertarian, or somewhere in between?

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

You are a slow learner, that was all in the OP.
If I'm a slow learner, you must be some one that can't see the big picture. ;)

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

Wait I thought if you are asked to speak at a commencement that the people in the commencement should have veto power, at least that is what most of you were saying when Michelle Obama was asked to speak at a high school recently........

Oh or is this another example of right wing hypocrisy?

How dare you say Moochelle and Condioleezza Rice in the same breath.

I see you spelled your name wrong in your signature.........unless your mother named you liberal.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

Besides gender and race, what?

Being educated, strong, modern women with high profiles.

The biggest difference is that Michelle is married with children, while Condoleezza is single.

No, the most significant difference is that Dr. Rice's many and varied accomplishments, talent, and achievements have been accomplished on her own merit rather than because of who she married. ;)

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

Yet another example in the evidence file that our universities have been taken over by the left. What is it with you leftist and free speech anyway? Why do you try so hard to muzzle any point of view you don't share? One thing though, Condi is one classy lady and showed the kids and profs at Rutgers how to be an adult.

"Former secretary of state Condoleeza Rice is withdrawing from the Rutgers University commencement ceremony.

Her invitation by the school’s board of governors had sparked protests from faculty and students, and now Rice has decided not to speak to avoid creating a distraction.
In a statement to be released this morning, Rice says,
Commencement should be a time of joyous celebration for the graduates and their families. Rutgers’ invitation to me to speak has become a distraction for the university community at this very special time.
I am honored to have served my country. I have defended America’s belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy. But that is not what is at issue here. As a Professor for thirty years at Stanford University and as it’s former Provost and Chief academic officer, I understand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way.
Good luck to the graduates and congratulations to the families, friends and loved ones who will gather to honor them.

EXCLUSIVE: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement | National Review Online

Universities have been taken over by the left? R u kidding me?

The law school at Stanford has John Yoo on the faculty. The left? R u kidding me?

Yoo is an authoritarian from the Neocons. It was he who rationalized away constitutional concerns. It was he who framed the institutionalization of torture in the US Government.

Is that right, left, center, or just plain old "barbarian"?

I think it is good that the younger generation objected to having a war criminal address the students. Who is next? Charles Manson to address the students?

Gawd. #NoRice sounds great to me, and I don't even tweet.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

So you think Yoo is representative of the rank-and-file in academia?

If Dr. Rice's appearance was unacceptable to Rutgers, it shouldn't have invited her. But it did. Whether the speaker is someone whose view you approve of or not, Rice's feeling no choice but to back out of the appearance should be an embarrassment to the university. Perhaps in the future, Rutgers won't waste time with speakers from diverse backgrounds and opinions and will simply present a list of potential guests to the few protesting profs and their students for approval. Much simpler and more graceful this way.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

I'll attempt to be consistent here and say that I believe Ms. Rice did the polite and gracious thing by putting the special day of the students ahead of her own ego or desires.

This is the same position I recommended when a couple of weeks ago there was a thread about the First Lady causing controversy by being a commencement speaker at a highschool and several parents and students objected. It was my advice that she not attend although most Democrats/liberals believed she should speak.

Either you believe that controversial speakers should not be chosen for such events or you have no problem - it should not be based on your perception of their controversial behaviour or their political affiliation.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

IMO, Ms. Rice's withdrawal was, in fact, classy. She yielded to the students' desires.

On a larger point, the students and university missed out on the kind of opportunities that come with academic freedom. Academic freedom provides students with exposure to differing perspectives under the idea that such exposure helps them sharpen their own analytical and critical thinking capacities. The development of such capacities is stunted when students are exposed only to a narrow range of ideas and are not placed in a perspective of having to consider and weigh differing viewpoints.

I certainly hope that Yoo is not representative. But his position on the faculty has been defended by Stanford since he's been there. I am not the only man to understand the criminality of what Yoo did, and people have complained. The administration won't budge, providing insight into its compromised position.

That the students caused the administration to change its mind is a good thing.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

Part of free speech that you obviously HATE is that people can protest. Why do you hate free speech so much?

Those little morons don't even have an idea what they were protesting.

Rice is also a self made woman, not coat tailing on her husbands laurels. ie Hillary. Anyone that would not want her to speak at their school is clearly a narrow minded fool that will do nothing with their lives in the future.

And neither do you obviously.

Ignorance is bliss. America should work like this; when I am talking you listen and the same when you are talking I will listen. The key word is "listen". In this country we are permitted to speak our thoughts. The useless loudmouths in colleges (being paid for by their mommies and daddies) that have since the 60's screamed at people they disagree with prove out they have no concept of the principals of a democracy. Silent protest is acceptable when someone is speaking but the spineless left insist on believing volume is more important than substance.

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

As far as I can tell, this has nothing to do with free speech. This is about Rutgers students not wanting their commencement ceremony tainted by one of the architects of the Iraq war, the most egregious crime of state in recent history. I'm sure if you surveyed the Rutgers students, they would have no objection to Rice giving a lecture, just not during their graduation ceremony.

The same Iraq war voted FOR democrats?!

re: Rice Withdraws from Rutgers Commencement [W:77]

You know Einstein was a Socialist, right?

Ben Franklin never believed in America have a president.

Gandhi did not like blacks and women.

So what's your point?

So where are your comments in the thread where a high school was protesting Michelle Obama? Must have missed you there, but please feel free to show your outrage at those students as well.

Here's another factoid for you. Protesting IS free speech, even if it is protesting something YOU like.
