Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'[W:32]

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

Sometimes known as Weird News Daily.

I'll try to remember that one, there's so many these days.

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

So is it hate speech or the encouragement of violent acts? Just for the record...

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

They don't need to start doing it, they've been doing it for quite a while.

Anyone who doesn't think that the NSA Has been closely monitoring the internet for a long time is out of touch with reality.

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

Sometimes those two things go together.

And sometimes they don't. So this proposed legislation is directed at which?

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

Moderator's Warning:
This is a perfect example of what we do not want here at DP folks. The next time I see it or something like it and infractions will be handed out. And if that is too vague for you...stop the trolling, baiting, and flaming. Or else.

Promoting violent acts... if that's "hate speech" then it should be watched for. As usual you're in hyped, drama queen territory where what you're typing and implying is very dramatically different than what is actually going on, and your "sky is falling" drama resembles a teen girl's. Seriously, aren't you guys tired of being thusly yet?

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

Is it better to just put it bluntly: he's over-dramatizing and misconstruing (probably purposefully) what the proposed legislation is actually about?

I can't decide if it's worse to **** with someone and mock them or to purposefully misrepresent what something is about in order to promote your own agenda.

I have no agenda, other than to warn people about Gov't overreach and mob rule. The rest is your own imagination.

Who can be the first to correctly answer why the Gov't never wants to admit mistakes or appear to be wrong?

So was the proposed legislation in the OP about hate speech or calls for violent acts?

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

They already are watching, just not yet kicking down doors....yet. A group I belong to were headed to attend a Muslim meeting and the traffic was terrifying. A black friend of mine was eating white crackers and almost choked to death because he did not have any water to wash them down. We passed a bus load of lesbians on the way to the meeting and was glad to see they were also going to attend. A group of union strikers were on a location near the meeting so we had to change directions to avoid an upheaval. We had some trouble with the gas we purchased on the way so we feared we would not make it. We pulled over to check out the "check engine light" and there was a guy that looked just like Putin that assured us we will be good to go. Luckily the motor fired right up and we launched like a rocket to resume our journey. One of us got bombed at her birthday party last night on bloody marys so she was not up for the trip. I think I'd rather drink cyanide than vodka but that's just me. When we arrive the Muslims began screaming with joy to see people of all races and political persuasions in attendance. Guns N' Roses was playing next door and the audience broke in to a riot when there was a power failure ending the concert. Well, the meeting lasted well in to the night and as we were leaving it was so late the streets looked like it was the end of the world with not a living soul in sight. On the way back one of got very ill so we called 911 and they came and got him and it turns out he ate something poisonous that could have killed him had we not taken the drastic course of action . It was an enlightening experience to attend the FBI (Friends Brother Integrated) meeting but I wont be able to attend as I have a military obligation at the time of the next one.

Here's what hating "whistle blowers" on government spying of monitoring citizens leads too. A Bill that will allow the Feds to scour the Internet for anything they *think* or deem as "hate speech". That would include anything said on websites like Debate Politics, concerning these subjects, based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation and create recommendations to address such crimes.

Don't think it could happen? We could be creating an environment that we didn't expect or want. Watch out who you condemn, it may be yourself.

this isn't a violation of the first amendment at all

thought police backers will be happy though.

"They can go in to your phone, your wallet and home, your job, your bar, your car, your uncles, your aunts your pants, your mom, your dad even your little lad- there just ain't no place to hide and it is nation wide, it's not just in your head cuz they'll get after you're dead".

No, it's not even a constitutional challenge but I believe it's setting a dangerous precedent. When there's an attempt to use the anti hate speech laws as a specific tool for a form of censorship, it starts to become vague about what's wrongly said and what's dangerous speech. The law is meant as a blunt tool, not a weapon of control and there's too much Media outrage influencing the decisions of regulating organizations right now.

That is why i say that it is a constitutional violation. i agree the feigned moral outrage is getting out of control, but it allows the chest thumpers to thump.
there is no way that this law should pass a constitutional review if it can even pass.

Of course it can happen. The government loves spying and oppression.

The fed has been doing that for years. That was most of the NSA's monitoring of US citizen's cell phone chatter. Or their online exchanges. The NSA has algorithms that processed millions of calls and online posts every day. They don't keep records of the banter. All they're looking for is key words. "Bomb" is a biggy. That'll get you some unwanted attention. Phrases that threaten violence against the US get recorded, and are sometimes investigated. That's what the NSA concerned itself with: finding domestic terrorists. They could care less about your latest saccharine call to a new lover.

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

The bill also applies to those encouraging the commision of crimes of hate which are not necessarily violent since they may include acts of graffiti or vandalism.

FBI — Overview

Not a lawyer here, but wouldn't that fall under "conspiracy to commit crime" under any other circumstance?

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

I'm generally uncomfortable with any increased surveillance of the internet for comments made that may be criminal. That being said, would anybody here write in to a newspaper and write that somebody should kill a head of state or minorities? No? Then why would you think writing those things on a public internet forum is any more appropriate or prudent?

I don't care what the hell they are concerned about. The government is limited in action and power. That's it. These "if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear" arguments (which most assuridly yours is) are crap arguments based in authoritarianism and not upon the rights and liberties of The People.

Conspiracy (basically an agreement to cooperate) requires two way communication - posting views, even while hoping to influencie others, is not a conspiracy.

Thanks for the sermon, reverend. Talk about fire and brimstone. But tell me, where in my post do you see an endorsement of the NSA? I'm stating facts about federal policy as it existed. You needn't educate me on legality. What many federal agencies have been doing, is conducting illegal surveillance on all of us, without benefit of warrant. That's not allowed. In the argument of safety vs. privacy, I'll take the added threat of terrorism over Big Brother every time.

Re: Big Chill: Feds want to scour Net, Media for 'Hate Speech'

psh, then i would have never enjoyed that 70s show.

obviously the feds can, but its a huge slope between going after a wannabe warlord like tigger than someone like me. These things have happened in the past, but we will see it coming years in advance.

Most people never see it coming till it way too late. Its the frog and boiling water analogy.

They may only be looking for terrorists now but there's nothing to stop them from gathering other kinds of information. Everything from peoples dirty little secrets, comments on race, criticizing the gov't to keeping a dossier on people of position and power... all for leverage.

That's what J Edgar Hoover did for decades.
