It appears for now.....Diplomacy has failed. After yesterdays rhetoric by Kerry and Obama. Plus the tone of voice and language used by Kerry. Putin is now done talking. There will be no discussing anything with Obama either. Nor Hagel. We may now be moving towards a certainty with the conflict being stepped up of becoming involved into that armed conflict. If Russia invades and any NATO jumps. The US is obliged by treaty to come to their assistance. Does anyone see Putin pulling back now? What say ye?

Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to the diplomacy, for now.

“Putin will not talk to Obama under pressure,” said Igor Yurgens, Chairman of the Institute for Contemporary Development, a prominent Moscow think tank, and a close associate of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “It does not mean forever.”

Obama and Putin last spoke over the phone on April 14, a call that the White House said was initiated at Moscow’s request. Obama urged Putin in the call to end Kremlin support for armed, pro-Russian activists creating unrest in eastern Ukraine. Obama also warned that the U.S. would impose more “costs” on Russia if Putin continued his current course. According to the Kremlin’s readout of the call, Putin denied Russian interference in eastern Ukraine and said “that such speculations are based on inaccurate information.”

Diplomatic sources close to the process confirmed that Putin is not interested in speaking with Obama again in the current environment. The two leaders might talk again in the future but neither side is reaching out for direct interaction, as they had been doing since the Ukraine crisis began. The failure of the agreement struck last week in Geneva between the contact group of the U.S., EU, Russia, and Ukraine has made further direct Washington-Moscow interactions moot.

Other top U.S. officials are also now out of direct contact with their Russian interlocutors. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is also getting the cold shoulder from his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu. Pentagon officials have reached out to Russia on Mr. Hagel’s behalf within the past 24 hours but have not gotten any response, according to Pentagon Spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren.

That leaves the channel between Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as the only semi-functioning high-level diplomatic channel between Washington and Moscow. But even that often-frosty relationship has further chilled as the two sides hurled insults and accusations this week.....snip~

There comes a time when diplomacy is pointless....Putin has lied and pretty much ignored everyone who had tried to talk him out of aggression.

Perhaps it is time to send a Carrier Group into the black sea (at EU request of course)....and "Lend" a couple dozen aircraft to Poland.

Why should he talk with people that talk about everything on the table, is continously drawing red lines all over the place and swinging a tiny twig squeecks in a loud voice?

That would have been the right move in Georgia. The syrian thing and now this would have been much easier that way.

Why is The Democrat Senator Carl Levin in Kiev? What is his ass doing over there? Should our politicians be heading over to the Ukraine where......the people don't trust the Temp Government, where a civil war can break out at any time, and with our Leaders warning and threatening to do this or that to Russia. On their doorstep. Wherein Putin has 150k troops ready to jump off. 40 K in immediate exercises within a half mile of Ukraine's Border. Already we have accounts of Russian fighters flying into that part of the Ukraine.

Those targeted sanctions will still fall short of what many in Washington, including leading Democrats, are calling on the Obama administration to do. During a stop in Kiev Thursday, Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin said that the U.S. “should make more robust use of the powers established in Executive Order 13661, which authorizes sanctions against the Russian financial, energy, metals, mining, engineering, and defense sectors… and we should use this authority to sanction Russian banks… and to take on Russia’s manipulation of energy prices and supplies, which it uses to coerce not only Ukraine, but also many of its neighbors.”

Obama said Thursday there is a limit to the harm he wishes to see imposed on Putin. Asked during his stop in South Korea if he would save Putin from drowning, Obama said. “I absolutely would save Mr. Putin if he were drowning. I’d like to think that if anybody is out there drowning I’m going to save them.”.....snip~

Did you see what I had up here yesterday.....with the Georgia President speaking out?

Yes, I saw that. But it is only natural. The man needs Russian cooperation. But I don't think he is right. Putin is not going to be more aggressive only because someone angers him. He might retaliate, but Chamberlain learned what happens, when you tiptoe to a dictator's tune. It was stupid not to bring Georgia and Ukraine into Nato in the mid 1990s and we are paying for that cowardice now.

Where do you think this leads us now?....Obama knows Kerry got played by Lavrov, and now all other ties are closed off. Putin knows we would have to honor NATO agreements. But he also knows.....the Ukraine isn't a part of them.

As to Georgia.....seems Russia and a few others acknowledge their Independence. Why not so many others?

At the moment the question is how to avoid taking the blame for the EU's mess. Ukraine is possibly a lost cause, where only half the country remains with Kiew. It could easily descend into civil war and skirmishes at the eastern boarder of West Europe could in a very bleak scenario even go to worse. That could be nasty for the reputation of the responsible party. That must not be the usa.

Russia will do as it pleases everywhere it pleases. The once might America is today a wilting bag of nothing thanks to trillions spent on welfare and nothing on the defense of the defenseless. A coming trillion dollar further reduction in our military. 600 soldiers sent to areas in Europe in response to millions of professional Russian troops trained and ready to strike at Putin's call! What a pathetic president and vice president we have. You lobbies voted for this socialist swine and now the world will pay the price.

Yeah, I really don't see how they will be able to take out the separatists without Military action. With Russia and the Kremlin taking this stance and the way the Western media is playing it out. They won't allow Putin to be seen he is making decisions under duress or by influence coming from us or being threatened, and warned repeatedly.

He already has been setting things in motion to take whatever hit economically. As he has Shell Oil and another that say it is Business as usual. Plus he has India and the others in South America, and I think China will support him now. Especially after what Obama said while in Japan.

Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy in condemning Putin For "failing to convince the pro-Russian separatists to disarm" as the Ukrainian army advances upon them? We were supposed to convince the Kiev regime to stand down, too as part of the Geneva agreement, were we not?

Mornin' Jack. :2wave: Yeah.....I think those ones around Donetsk pretty much show they don't care for Yanokovich either. Although they say the language would be Russian.

What I am wondering about are all those that are both Russian and Ukrainian.....and what region they would more apt to be in?

I'm having a tough time understanding what our strategy is here. If it is our goal to see ONE Ukraine, democratic, and friendly towards the west then it would seem to me that we should be doing everything in our power to convince Kiev not to do anything provocative. Russia's "moral high ground" resides in protecting the people in eastern Ukraine from the regime in Kiev. Seems like convincing Kiev to stand down is the only way to ensure that Russia won't intervene.

Yeah, everyone just loves to hear stuff like that - especially coming from Kerry, of all people. If he said that to you, would you immediately change any plans you had made?

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

i can only hope the US, Nato and the EU has a planned response if russia goes into eastern ukraine, if not that would be totally messed up.

G7 agrees new sanctions on Russia as observers held in Ukraine.....

The Russian foreign ministry said it was working to resolve the observer crisis, which it blamed on Kiev for failing to ensure the mission's safety in "areas where the authorities do not control the situation and where a military operation against residents of their own country has been unleashed".

Russia's envoy to the Vienna-based OSCE said Moscow would take all steps to free them, Russian media reported.

It is standard practice for serving military officers to be seconded to OSCE missions.

In a joint statement, G7 leaders said Russia had not taken any concrete steps to implement an accord, signed in Geneva, intended to rein in illegal armed groups.

"Instead, it has continued to escalate tensions by increasingly concerning rhetoric and ongoing threatening military maneuvers on Ukraine's border," it said.

"We have now agreed that we will move swiftly to impose additional sanctions on Russia.

Russian banks have been moving funds out of foreign accounts in anticipation of sanctions.

Russia has threatened to cut off gas to Ukraine, which would have a knock-on effect on customers further west because many pipelines transit the country. Officials from the EU and Ukraine met in Kiev on Saturday to discuss technical ways to reduce the impact of a cut-off.....snip~

G8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Group of Eight (G8) was the name of a forum for the governments of a group of eight leading industrialised countries, that was originally formed by six leading industrialised countries and subsequently extended with two additional members.[1] Russia, which was invited to join as the last member, was excluded from the forum by the other members on March 24, 2014 as a result of its involvement in the 2014 Crimea crisis in Ukraine.[2] Thus the group now comprises seven nations and will continue to meet as the G7 group of nations.

I am sure this was received well also. I also believe this will help UN relations also dont you?
For what its worth fear mongering
