Walkout of Anti-Gay Event

A felon owning a firearm doesn't harm anyone.
Is this a fair summary of your position?
And mine also. Straying off the designated snow-mobile path when snow storm hits and ending up in federal wilderness (a felony) shouldn't deprive you of your right to defend yourself with a gun.

I personally know a few felons and I have no problem with them being armed.

Yea, I am worried. Whats he going to do, write me up?

What's God going to do? I'm just an atheist so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but I imagine there's a fair amount an omniscient, omnipotent dude could think of to make your life irritating.

Dang that First Amendment. How dare they.

What in the hell does this have to do with the First amendment? Did the Government stop him from speaking? I love people who throw out the First Amendment and don't have a clue what it is actually about. Go read it before you post nonsense.

So anyone who demonstrates themselves to be intolerant should lose equal treatment under the law? I think I could actually get behind that.

Well, there goes the Republican Party.

Yeah, because God knows we can't expect those thugs to ever break the law.:lamo

A felon can get a waiver to join the Army and use more devastating weapons than a handgun. I'm not worried about it like I'm not worried about gays in the military, having served with both.

Hello all,

I've been meaning to post this for a few days, just haven't gotten around to it.

I am a student at Sinclair Community College, where this took place. Yes, I was there. It was actually rather fun. LaBarbera was late, so we all took turns talking about why acceptance is better than vitriol and opposition. We stayed for a few minutes, then we just left.

Some claim that this was orchestrated by faculty, offering extra credit in their classes. For my part, none of my faculty members even mentioned this event was occuring, the only way I knew about was billboards around campus (like the one pictured in the 1st link below). I do know that a student advocacy group (the Traditional Values Club) invited LaBarbera to speak, and another advocacy group (the Silent Majority) were the ones who staged the protest. Both groups have faculty members.

The area where this happened was in the second floor of our library, we call it the Loggia. It can hold maybe 100-150 people, and as you can see in the picture, it was close to full when the event started, but after the exodus, maybe 20 people stayed to listen.

Wow good to see there were 20 people against sick and disgusting behavior! But hey those butt buddies really showed them huh? did they all meet somewhere later and pass each transgender around later as a reward?

Any chance that you're kidding?

In areas such as environmental regulation and gun control,it is liberals who seek to reduce liberties. They see these as justified restrictions due to the greater good, but restricts what an individual can do nonetheless.

All authoritarian positions have that premise, even mine :)

So you people staged a orchestrated "walkout" and left the people that agreed with this guy there to listen unabated by nonsensical " pro gay " rhetoric and out burst and your'e calling this a win ?

Its about as contrived as possible.

Really? Explain how that waiver works. Having served in the military, I know for damned sure I don't want anybody who committed a felony watching my back. He might just decide to put a knife in it for the change in my pocket.

Really? in canada a DUI is a felony that sound bad to you? think he is "dangerous"?

It works exactly like any other waiver. The conviction normally disqualifies you, so your recruiter puts in a waiver request, and you have to supply supporting documentation as to why you should be granted the waiver. The Recruiting&Retention Battalion Commander then decides if they will grant or deny you the waiver based on the "Whole Person" concept. It's the same process as any other waiver for tattoos or single parent or a GED instead of HS diploma, etc.

What you fail to realize is that not all felonies are violent. Just because someone got a felony charge for receiving imported seafood packed in plastic bags doesn't mean they would ever stab you. Paranoid much?

If you call in to your work sick when you're not really sick, that's a felony too. Your conduct can seen as a “scheme” to defraud the company of its “intangible right” to your “Honest Services.” There's a process in place for convicted felons to have their right to vote right to keep and bear arms restored, too. Convicted felons are already legally buying firearms and getting carry permits, and there isn't 'blood in the streets' as a result. So let's all just calm down on the whole 'armed felon' thing.

Really, behind as in? You really want to go down that road? I doubt it. I think you got a good look at what people are willing to fight for 2 weeks ago. Try taking our equal treatment under the law. I dare ya.

And this isn't?

Truth be told, I have no problem with the guy coming to speak his mind. I am not sitting here telling everyone that the government should shut him down - in fact I believe the opposite. But if you are going to use your first amendment rights, you have to be willing to accept that others are going to use theirs, and that's exactly what we did. There is a rising tide of public opinion morally opposing the type of speech that LaBarbera is putting forward, in the same manner that public opinion once washed out the voice of segregationists and anti-miscegenation supporters. This is purely an outgrowth of that fact.

Question: Were you charged admission for the speaking engagement?

Tim-

I don't see why they should be denied their First Amendment rights to peacefully protest a guy with a hateful message.

tolerance does not require one to be tolerant of the intolerant. That's just silly circular reasoning.

"Tolerant" is subjective. In many cases, the minority is intolerant of the majority.

You act like one side is always right and one side is always wrong.

In many cases one side generally is always right and one side always wrong. Bigotry is one of those cases.

So if a black fraternity invited a Panther to talk to them, and a large group of white students did the same thing, who's right?

It would depend....your scenario doesn't have enough facts. If it was a black man/panther who held very anti-white views and was speaking about that....then I think he would be the intolerant one. Bigotry has never been exclusively white.
