A felon can get a waiver to join the Army and use more devastating weapons than a handgun. I'm not worried about it like I'm not worried about gays in the military, having served with both.

I am a student at Sinclair Community College, where this took place. Yes, I was there. It was actually rather fun. LaBarbera was late, so we all took turns talking about why acceptance is better than vitriol and opposition. We stayed for a few minutes, then we just left.

Some claim that this was orchestrated by faculty, offering extra credit in their classes. For my part, none of my faculty members even mentioned this event was occuring, the only way I knew about was billboards around campus (like the one pictured in the 1st link below). I do know that a student advocacy group (the Traditional Values Club) invited LaBarbera to speak, and another advocacy group (the Silent Majority) were the ones who staged the protest. Both groups have faculty members.

The area where this happened was in the second floor of our library, we call it the Loggia. It can hold maybe 100-150 people, and as you can see in the picture, it was close to full when the event started, but after the exodus, maybe 20 people stayed to listen.

So you people staged a orchestrated "walkout" and left the people that agreed with this guy there to listen unabated by nonsensical " pro gay " rhetoric and out burst and your'e calling this a win ?

Its about as contrived as possible.

Really? Explain how that waiver works. Having served in the military, I know for damned sure I don't want anybody who committed a felony watching my back. He might just decide to put a knife in it for the change in my pocket.

It works exactly like any other waiver. The conviction normally disqualifies you, so your recruiter puts in a waiver request, and you have to supply supporting documentation as to why you should be granted the waiver. The Recruiting&Retention Battalion Commander then decides if they will grant or deny you the waiver based on the "Whole Person" concept. It's the same process as any other waiver for tattoos or single parent or a GED instead of HS diploma, etc.

What you fail to realize is that not all felonies are violent. Just because someone got a felony charge for receiving imported seafood packed in plastic bags doesn't mean they would ever stab you. Paranoid much?

If you call in to your work sick when you're not really sick, that's a felony too. Your conduct can seen as a “scheme” to defraud the company of its “intangible right” to your “Honest Services.” There's a process in place for convicted felons to have their right to vote right to keep and bear arms restored, too. Convicted felons are already legally buying firearms and getting carry permits, and there isn't 'blood in the streets' as a result. So let's all just calm down on the whole 'armed felon' thing.
