If people would speak of conservatISM instead of conservaTIVES, then they would certainly display more acumen. Understanding a political philosophy means understanding its tenets, and treating poilitics in terms of mere identity fails to do so.
As to your blanket statement about conservaTIVES, being behind every blah blah blah, however, I would say you are wrong. In areas such as environmental regulation and gun control,it is liberals who seek to reduce liberties. They see these as justified restrictions due to the greater good, but restricts what an individual can do nonetheless.
Apparently 'conservative' isn't the only misused term. Anyone who wants to reduce liberties isn't liberal, no matter what you or they say. And I don't know if 'liberties' is the right word when it's environmental issues you're talking about.
I think there are valid reasons to be offended. I think this speaker was being blatantly disrespectful and offensive. Waking out can also be a form of protest against someone's message. This guy in my view has the same similar hatred that Fred Phelps does. I wouldn't sit through a speech by Phelps saying we should bully gay people and that God hates them. Likewise, I wouldn't sit through this moron's ignorant drivel nor give credibility to it. He doesn't deserve my attention or my presence.
There is a difference between walking out when someone directly insults you and calls for persecution of you than planning to go only to walk out. In the case of the bigot screaming a message of hate and advocating the bullying of Christians the people who walked out did not stage it, they walked out due to a hate message being spread in the speech.
