Vesuvius was not a big eruption. Only reason it is famous is because Romans built 2 towns too close to the mountain. Mount St. Helen was massively bigger than Vesuvius. The one you want to seriously worry about comparison wise is Krakatoa or Santorin type of eruption.. and in Yellowstone that is a possible planet killer type of event.
Nah. To be sure, whatever country (or countries) are in present day United States when it blows will be effectively finished, but it's not a planet killer. You want a planet killer? Look to the Permian Triassic extinction event, in which 90% of all marine life and 70% of land life went extinct because the sea floor suddenly upped and belched out methane hydrate.
Besides, "planet killer" is used incorrectly. There's a difference between mass extinction events and the ability of a thing to render the planet permanently uninhabitable.
