    Volcano Questions & Answers

Q: How imminent is an eruption of the Yellowstone Volcano?

A: There is no evidence that a catastrophic eruption at Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is imminent. Current geologic activity at Yellowstone has remained relatively constant since earth scientists first started monitoring some 30 years ago. Though another caldera-forming eruption is theoretically possible, it is very unlikely to occur in the next thousand or even 10,000 years.

The most likely activity would be lava flows such as those that occurred after the last major eruption. Such a lava flow would ooze slowly over months and years, allowing plenty of time for park managers to evaluate the situation and protect people. No scientific evidence indicates such a lava flow will occur soon.

i have heard the same reports that yellowstone is due or a catastrophic explosion. whether it happens or not is a different story, but from what i understand if and when it blows it will make mount St. Helen look like a firecracker.

it would be a Vesuvius type of explosion or worse.
Vesuvius was not a big eruption. Only reason it is famous is because Romans built 2 towns too close to the mountain. Mount St. Helen was massively bigger than Vesuvius. The one you want to seriously worry about comparison wise is Krakatoa or Santorin type of eruption.. and in Yellowstone that is a possible planet killer type of event.

Basically, the planet is a blink from seeing most of its life obliterated. Fortunately for us, it takes thousands of generations to equal a blink.

Nah. To be sure, whatever country (or countries) are in present day United States when it blows will be effectively finished, but it's not a planet killer. You want a planet killer? Look to the Permian Triassic extinction event, in which 90% of all marine life and 70% of land life went extinct because the sea floor suddenly upped and belched out methane hydrate.

Besides, "planet killer" is used incorrectly. There's a difference between mass extinction events and the ability of a thing to render the planet permanently uninhabitable.

Doubtful, plus I live in the ocean. Good winds will carry me far from danger.

Yeah, but who knows what civilization will look like 10,000 years from now. 10,000 years ago I think our greatest bragging right was the discovery of fire. Of course, to be fair, 10,000 years from now that may also be our greatest bragging right. 10k years is a pretty long time for us.

It depends on how much crap is thrown into the atmosphere. When Krakato exploded it lead to a couple of degrees fall in world wide temperatures and changes in growing patterns for crops. The ash clouds could be seen as far away as London, England.. and Krakato is in Indonesia.

Considering Yellowstone is a many many many times larger than Krakato, then well. One thing for sure is that most of the US and Canada is going to history, and with it probably much of the planet for at least a few decades.

Hey I predict you're completely wrong.
